A new book by a new author!

The Name of the Wind
Patrick Rothfuss

I'm not going to write much, but if you like fantasy you need to read this book. It is absolutely the best Fantasy novel I've read in years (Probably since G.R.R. Martin's first). Sadly it only came out in April (I read it in 3 days) so it will be awhile before the next, but it paused in a satisfying place so waiting won't make me hate the author.

Obviously not.

Whats the point in posting a rave about a book then not telling anyone what its about?

Maybe the person posting the rave wanted you to show some initiative and go to amazon, google or wikipedia to find out more on your own?

Quote:
The originality of Rothfuss's outstanding debut fantasy, the first of a trilogy, lies less in its unnamed imaginary world than in its precise execution. Kvothe ("pronounced nearly the same as 'Quothe' "), the hero and villain of a thousand tales who's presumed dead, lives as the simple proprietor of the Waystone Inn under an assumed name. Prompted by a biographer called Chronicler who realizes his true identity, Kvothe starts to tell his life story. From his upbringing as an actor in his family's traveling troupe of magicians, jugglers and jesters, the Edema Ruh, to feral child on the streets of the vast port city of Tarbean, then his education at "the University," Kvothe is driven by twin imperatives—his desire to learn the higher magic of naming and his need to discover as much as possible about the Chandrian, the demons of legend who murdered his family. As absorbing on a second reading as it is on the first, this is the type of assured, rich first novel most writers can only dream of producing. The fantasy world has a new star.

Taken from amazon.com was that so hard the original "raver" couldn't have done it?

I endorse the laziness of the original poster.

It's weird looking at reviews of this book; there's very little between, "this is nearly the best book I've ever read" and "this is nearly the worst book I've ever read."

Beh, ok... here's your more:

If what you look for in fantasy is large epic battles and militaristic settings or even detailed descriptions of sword fighting and individual combat, this book will not impress you. It may not even grab your attention. But, if what you enjoy is fully fleshed-out, engaging characters surrounded by intriguing secondary characters within a framework of mystery and discovery this book is one you will enjoy.

Now that said, I will admit that the story or reviews were not what caused me to buy it. I have actually been avoiding the fantasy genre lately because of the number of formulaic, trite novels that had come out. It was the cover art that grabbed my attention and then because I was lacking in anything else to read while on vacation threw it in my suitcase. The story was a surprising bonus.

I brought it home from the library today. The first few chapters have been quite engaging. Rothfuss writes with... I guess a more 'mature' voice. He writes with some humor, but it's wry, and kind of sneaks up on you. Also the tone of the book seems to be generally more cynical and world-weary than your average pulp fantasy. More shades of gray, less black-and-white good vs. evil, etc.
