It is Super Bowl time, so it must be time for more Roman Numeral questions...

I know that the objective of the numbering system was to use as few characters as possible when writing out the numbers (at least as few as possible while still using the system).

So why is 45 XLV (10 from 50 plus 5) and not VL (5 from 50)?
