Beowulf (the animated one) - its possible I'm getting Beowulf burnout. Its the best video game intro film ever made. When its done your ready to select player and start the game. Nude animated Angelina Jolie stars as Grendel's mom and wears high heels. Really hollywood? really?

So Green Zone's pretty good. Not great, but a pretty well executed Iraq movie.

Watched the Time Travelor's Wife this weekend and really liked it. Also watched Zombieland... it was ok but after watching the other-- well they didn't go together very well.

I still say Zombieland could have been much better if they had more of the "zombie kills of the week." Pretty much everything you see in the movie is everything you saw in the previews. However, the one celeb cameo towards the end of the movie really made it worth watching. People should see the movie just for that.

It's a good movie, no question, but I thought it could have been better. It's definitely worth seeing.

I had the opposite experience with that movie. It felt disjointed.. I never connected with the characters and felt like it was never really explained. Plus, I felt little sympathy for the woman in this film for some reason. She was ok with the time travel... ok with it... ok with it... until she all of a sudden wasn't. I bet the book was better.

Similar to what you said though, had the whole movie been more like the first half than it would've elevated itself to a 9 or 10; hopefully the sequel will be more hilarious violence and less 'other' stuff.

I didn't go see Time Traveler's Wife because I had read the book. I found the book creepy, I guess that's the only way I can put it. Here's a guy that travels back in time and visits his wife through the various stages of her life starting at a very early age. The whole premise was awkward and creepy.

For the horror movie fans...

Check out an Australian film named "Lake Mungo". This movie is pretty brilliantly executed, I think. It isn't a slasher or a screamer. It is more of a subtle creepy kind of movie. it succeeds in the use of the documentary format in ways many other films fail to grasp, but the true genius of this story is the incredibly subtle way they actually tell the story and how all of the supernatural events really tie back into each other when you are done (and stop and think about it). They are a little heavy handed with the "what happened" in the very end because I think they were afraid most people wouldn't have gotten it otherwise, but eh. I'll forgive them that for how well the rest was done. At the core? The story of a family dealing with the death of their daughter and the events that followed, including "ghost photography" where the dead girl keeps showing up. However, when it is discovered that son of the family staged the hoax, it causes the family to re-evaluate the footage they had and realize that they'd been so focused on what the son had been doing, they completely missed the real story playing out in front of them....

An A+ as far as I am concerned. Don't expect this to be a scary story. This is a movie that wants you to buy into a slightly modified reality that adds the creepy air to the overall story as you find the non-real parts to be more believable because the rest of it so closely adheres to our world.

2012 - Oh that wasn't very good at all now was it.

Repo Men - It's okay. Somehow I noticed the little things and they bothered me. The city is that Blade Runner/ future looking and their car still has a keyed ignition? Heck we're probably going to see car keys disappear in the next few years. And his wife's character is such an unbelievable bitch. You didn't have a problem with his job the first 10 years or so honey?

The movie "Pontypool" is absolutely fucking brilliant and probably my favorite zombie film to date.

I am guessing that the transmission method will either make you love or hate this film. It depends on how literal you are, I guess.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RsGPsbAd7Dc

trailer in case anyone wants to check it out. Here is a more in-depth (and spoiler heavy) description in case you want to know more. Just be advised it tells you everything.

Pontypool was adapted from the novel Pontypool Changes Everything by Tony Burgess, who also wrote the screenplay. The story is about "Shock jock" Grant Mazzy who has, once again, been kicked-off the Big City airwaves and now works at the only job he could get hosting the early morning show at CLSY Radio in Pontypool Ontario, which broadcasts from the basement of the small town's only church. What begins as another boring day of school bus cancellations due to yet another massive snow storm, things quickly turn deadly when reports of people having bizarre seizures, developing strange speech patterns and evoking horrendous acts of violence start piling in. Before long, Grant and the small staff at CLSY find themselves trapped in the radio station as they discover that this insane behaviour taking over the town is actually a deadly virus being spread through the English language itself. Do they stay on the air in the hopes of being rescued or, are they in fact providing the virus with its ultimate leap over the airwaves and into the world?

Dead Girl if nothing else it gets an A for originality. The zombie sex slave story was waiting to be told and this film does a fine job. A few plot holes mar it but otherwise it's fun cheap well done horror. Good for them.

Gentlemen Broncos Oh those quirky indie films, they're so quirky. The guy from "Flight of the Concords" is excellent and so is the film within the film. Sam Rockwell is awesome as always. Also any film that uses the song "In the Year 2525" gets a boost from me. Recommended.

Better than I expected, raunchier than I expected. It is not quite "The Hangover", but it is a good 90 minutes of fun (hey, it's the right length!)

The Protector - You know you've reached a strange point in your life when tieing elephant bones to your forearms is your best option. Great stupid fun.

Flyboys - Okay flick about WW1 fighter aces. Great dogfights, but you've seen most of the drama many times before.

Death at a Funeral is funny, but not great. I was hoping that Neil Labute would turn it into something more than just a comedy, because his movies are always interesting on a level other than the genre expects, but not so much the case here. Also there are so many stars, it seems like everyone is fighting for the joke, and so it doesn't really work as well as maybe it should (and I assume the British version did).

Date Night is basically the opposite of that, hilarious and a great ensemble movie. No one steps on anyone else, and everyone is really funny. There are a lot of good names here and pretty much everyone does a great comic role.

An Education is a fantastic movie, really one that pretty much everyone should see.

KickAss -- Great movie. Was a little off center when compared to the comic book, but the changes made it good for the movie.

if you liked the first one, you'll like the 2nd.

I'm not sure what all these complaints of "omg too many people" are all about. Do people really have THAT hard a time following more than one plot at a time? I thought it was fine.

From what I've read, he'll be the villain in the third one.

Out of Sight

Rented it to watch with the wife, thinking it would be a smarter brand of romantic comedy. I was very suprised how good it was, although my wife lost interest.

There is a slight Pulp Fiction feel, and the "love story" definitely is a bit of a stretch, but it is such a sublte, fun film. I really loved it.

There's a huge difference between the Spiderman3 and the (old) Batman movies with their multiple villians, each trying to tell the full story of the individual character *as well* as the base plot... and a movie that has a lot of characters all on a similar story path/arc. Lord of the Rings had a crapton more characters than IronMan2 and you didn't hear people bitching about it.

lord of the rings had their character development done for them.

spider man 3 and the villains/heroes included did...well, they certainly tried, but they failed. Sandman had no place in that movie what so ever.

There isn't a problem with lots of characters, there is a problem with characters being paper cut-outs there to simply connect cheesy action sequences. That's the problem with Batman 3/4 and Spiderman 3.

When you flood a movie with characters, that's usually what happens. Superman 2 managed to have 4 villians and 2 distinct directors, and it turned out pretty good.

I haven't seen IM2 yet, so I dunno how it goes.

I think the problem with batman 3/4 was joel schumaker more than the multiple characters.

JCVD

For people not familiar - it is about Jean Claude Van Damme. He is broke, old, and just lost custody of his daughter. He goes into a bank / post office that is being robbed.

Very interesting. I was a little bummed that it was in French, which made it a bit distracting. They really paint JC as a completely broken man, and it was really interesting. I expected it to be a bit more of a dark comedy, but it really was more of an art house film and a lot slower than I expected. They show the same scene a couple times from a different point-of-view, which sorta works/sorta doesn't.

I liked it, but didn't love it. Definitely worth checking out if you were a fan back in the day.

Pretty decent zombie fare. If you liked Diary of the Dead definitely check it out. Thought it never ceases to amaze me how characters in movies value money in such situations.

Gladiator for bookworms. It's the story of Hypatia of Alexandria, and her confrontation with the rising Christian church during the decline of the Empire. I enjoyed it, although I liked the new Robin Hood too. :)

Some might say its anti-christian, but I think it's more antifundie. There's obvious parallels the movie tries to draw between then and now.

I just watched The Road, or as I like to call it How To Be A Sniveling, Whining Survivor Of The Apocalypse Despite All Odds Against It Just To Piss Off Darwin.

It's another one of those movies you wish the main characters would die, preferably soon so you can stop watching the fucking thing.

But not bad enough to actually piss off the family to walk out on.

I can't figure out who read that book (The Road) and decided it would make a great movie. Every single word on every single page drips despair and it never ends.

It was a brilliant book FOR the that reason, but not exactly inspiring (to me) stuff for a movie.

Agreed! And it pretty much ends the apocalypse film genre. After "The Road" all other post apocalypisans have it easy.

I'm looking at you "Book of Eli".

The writing style for that book was painful to read. I thought the book sucked for that reason.

A lot of people have that complaint. I'm still hard pressed to think of a single other novel that encapsulates a specific emotion so perfectly. I'll never read it again, but I'll also never forget it.

I watched get him to the greek. Funny movie, but what stuck with me was how many people took their young kids to this movie at the 10pm show my wife and I saw. I saw 2 mothers take their, what looked like, 6-10 year old kids to that movie. Made me sad.

Survival of the Dead

Pretty decent zombie fare. If you liked Diary of the Dead definitely check it out. Thought it never ceases to amaze me how characters in movies value money in such situations.

I hated hated "Diary of the Dead". But I was still willing to give this one a try. But it's gone from theaters already.

So....yeah.

It is at this point in Mr. Shamalayan's career, that I am starting to wonder who was writing with/for him in his earliest works. It would make sense in a really strange way in explaining why a movie like Signs is HALF of a perfect movie for me and the other half drives me utterly insane.

Even with a pre-written story, loved by a lot of kids and adults alike, he flopped so badly that this movie has been hovering between 6% and 8% on rotten tomatoes.

The only good side to such a hard flop is that he won't be allowed to further corrupt the story with a second one.

I said a long time ago that I have jumped off his bandwagon. I (like everyone else) jumped on with Sixth Sense, and I stayed even through horrible flops like The Village and Lady in the Water. But The Happening was the last straw, and I simply refuse to watch another one of his films.

I do find it odd that it seems like each movie gets progressively worse and worse. His apex of his career is going to be his first major picture released? And then every one after goes downhill? How much worse can it get?

Like I said, it really makes me wonder who ACTUALLY wrote his first couple of movies.

That or he had some really, really good producers that should have gotten a writing credit on those films.
