I would prefer a KOTOR 3 myself if I could choose. The 1st two were so awesome, it's a great way to pass a few dozen hours.

Great looking trailer. Wonder how much of the game will be pvp based. Since sith and jedi dont like each other much lol. Kinda hope its not going to be the main goal or a huge chunk but guess thats wishful thinking.

Since they suggested that jedi can change to the dark side and other "side changes" that would be interesting.

Star Wars: The Old Republic - Hands On

There's some good insight into the game here. I've quoted some of the highlights.

Quote:
Even at this early stage, The Old Republic is as polished, as playable and as slick as... that other major MMO. Why? How? Because BioWare Austin, the studio responsible, have paid attention to the details from the very start. And their ambition seems limitless. They want to make an MMORPG that encapsulates the essence of their single-player games: a true online sequel to classics like Knights of the Old Republic and Baldur’s Gate. They want to make a game with proficient, modern production values, fully voiced cutscenes and multi-threaded conversations. They want to reduce the grind – removing the tedious fetch 10 and kill 20 quests that plague the genre – and tie everything into their story. They want to introduce genuine consequence, giving parties of players the kind of moral choices their single-player games have become famous for.

Image

Quote:
Right now, this is the most exciting game in development. As the aforementioned Force-choked trooper slides to the floor, clutching his chest, a horrifying truth becomes apparent: The Old Republic is a credible World of Warcraft killer.

What’s extraordinary is just how playable it is, even at this stage. BioWare have been playing with the working game for months, and are now smoothing the myriad details into a workable whole.

Quote:
While BioWare might have already done loads of creative work with the KotOR games, they aren’t entirely free to mess with the canon. Star Wars is still owned, and tightly controlled, by LucasArts. “Everything has to be cleared,” Walton admits. “But it’s actually been relatively smooth. Part of the decision to use the KotOR era was to allow us some latitude, some freedom to get away from the films. So we’re in an ideal spot to have a lot of familiar stuff, but there’s loads of freedom.”

Image

Quote:
It gets better. Each of those campaigns is the equivalent of one of the previous KotOR games. A grand adventure for each of the six character classes. Each of those campaigns is fully voiced, with multiple paths (and every dialogue choice is spoken. This is probably the largest voiceover project the games industry has ever undertaken). It’s a big, big, big game.

Quote:
BioWare have developed different game mechanics for every character class. The Jedi and Sith are melee-focused magic users, while smuggler and trooper classes will use cover to keep out of trouble, and fight with blasters. The bounty-hunter, the only other class so far revealed, can use the kinds of tools we seldom see in MMOs: a jetpack and a flamethrower. Walton explains that this was intentional: “You have to do that if you want players to have different experiences while playing together.” Each of the classes has their own separate game mechanic, and each needs to be catered to within the layout of the levels.

Image

Quote:
At the end of the presentation, the point is made that what BioWare have shown is nothing like the MMOs we know of today. Where are the PvP arenas? Or the large, 25+ player raids? Or auction houses? Or, hey, space-combat? Vogel raises an eyebrow. “Oh, we have all that too. We’re just going to wait a little bit to show you that.” That’s a promise that seems too good to be true. Stay tuned. The Old Republic is going to be huge.

The only problem I see is the constant references to the game being in early development. They continue to say "even at this early stage" or some variety of that quote, which makes me wonder exactly how long we will be waiting before the game hits the shelves.

How this went unnoticed, I'm not sure, but there was some clips from E3 of actual in game character movement and environment interaction. I am at work and it's blocked from here but I'm sure someone else like Kham can find it and post it, he hadn't even seen it and it was pretty damn hot.

I found a set of early alpha footage but I haven't managed to dig up anything other than this.

Edit:
Found an interview with some clips too;

Yeah, for sure.
Not a fan of the running style of the Sith (reminded me of the hunched over Dark Elves from Lineage II), but that may change (fingers crossed :p).

Looks decent, though. Curious how big a universe it will be in order to have some replayability value.

From all the information out there, I can tell you about replayablility...but I have to make a comparison first.

Remember how EQ1 effectively had 1 Starting Zone for every race and eventually people messed together at some point through leveling? Well, SW:ToR takes that to a different level. Each class, regardless of race, will start on a specific Planet and will have their own unique story arc that progresses from 1 to Max Level (rumored to be 50). The Bounty Hunter for example, their Class Story Arc is "The Great Hunt"...which is where Bounty Hunters throughout the galaxy hunt for the "most prized" target in the galaxy at the time. As the BH levels, new parts of the Great Hunt quest will be accessible.

Naturally, Class Story Arcs cross with General Story Arcs (quests and missions available to everyone)...as seen in the part of the video with the BH and SW on the ship.

So in theory, the game should have lots of replay value with playing the different classes because of the Story Arcs.

And I want a pony. The Star Wars universe isn't gritty and dark. Even 'Empire Strikes Back' wasn't. It was simply less colorful only because of Hoth's whiteness and Cloud City's sterility...(which Lucas went back and glittered up).

And unfortunately the younger set playing will probably be more focused on Episodes I II and III because that's what released in their lifetime. /weep And those movies are even more colorful, what with Naboo and all.

If they're taking a cue from KOTOR, the choice may affect the way the quest works, but influence gained or lost may be retrievable through other means.

They said that you're able to walk the line between Light/Dark throughout your adventure if you choose, but doing so will be very difficult and could possibly cause issues at the late end.

You've got to remember that Republic doesn't equal good and Sith doesn't equal evil...the developers are quick to point out that the duality isn't so clear. You could, for example, but a Republic Trooper who kills or terrorizes people or a Sith Warrior who follows the code of the Sith but isn't a blood thirsty murdering psychopath.

As for the look of the game. I'm rather glad they decided to go with (what they call) Stylized Realism. I don't really see the harm in an animated approach, as I personally believe that games which try too hard to be near photo realistic end up being a bit on the cheese side and tend to limit those able to play the games to people with super high end computer capable of rendering the game without being on super low settings (which in turn make the game look like crap...IE Warhammer, Vanguard, EQ2, Aion).

It all depends. They've said that they're looking for the game to run on pretty low end systems, but the definition of low end is sure to change by the time its released.

Nice stuff. I liked what I have seen so far. Kinda of felt like KOTOR III haha Tell ya the truth, I think the MMO element will add to the over all exp of the series. Where other players full the roles of other hunters going after your prize kills and loots.

The smugger class seems interesting, but I wonder why they will work in raids or large boss battles where cover might be an issue. I really want to see how BioWare handles raids in this game...and PvP because I can see balance being a HUGE problem in this game.

Anyways, I'm really looking forward to the story driven content myself. I will be taking my time and enjoying the dialogue big time. It will add to the replay valve ten fold for me.

you don't really know that for any MMO, no one knew what WoW was going to be like at the end game when it was first released. WoW has started the info pr0nz before expansions are released, but that's generally a bad thing imo, because it writes checks that they may not be able to cash.

Bad analogy. Blizzard can write A LOT of mother fucking checks. Too bad that doesn't translate into content (which is of course what you meant!).

Every player will have their own personal Starship which acts like a player house...

Battlegrounds are called Warzones, the first of which is based on Alderaan.

Well, I know what ship I want as my personal ship....

That's not a trailer for a game. There's no in game graphics, no gameplay elements or no interface. It's as useless as the intro movie from EQ when it came out. It's awesome tho and it should totally be made into a movie.

It also pretty clearly demonstrates why Jedi shouldn't be a player class.

Wow. Lets be honest, those sith were kinda huge pussies.

Also, he'll probably kill that jedi girl later! Many lulz.

I expect all the non jedi classes to be OP when the game is released. It's the only way they will get anyone to play them.

Sounds similar to those damn dwarf "healers" in DAOC that could solo like 15 opponents at once with their Aoe stun lol.

Or the player Jedi will be terrible...like the nameless guys randomly holding lightsabers in the movies who get blasted by one stormtrooper or something. ;)

Cow has an interesting point...but that's exactly who the Jedi/Sith are in this timeframe. They're just 'average' Force Users. This is why its perfectly possible for a Trooper to take out a Sith Warrior without needing the force.

That's also why they have made the jedi's and sith tanks and healers, that way people will play them and other classes and not just focus on how 'badass' the jedi are.

The more I read about this game the less excited I get. None of the classes sound even remotely interesting or unique. More cookie-cutter than WoW, if that's even possible(and hell, even WoW was able to expand on class roles beyond what EQ and other predecessors did). So there will be battlegrounds, player housing, and an interactive quest system. Any seriously interesting ideas on the table yet, or is this pretty much it with fancy graphics and the cookie-cutter Bioware dialogue box?

I think I'm going to throw up if I see the 50th non-gameplay CG trailer.

I just can't really see it sucking that badly. And by that I mean on a Age of Conan/Warhammer scale. If anything it should have enough for you to do in a similar vein as the single player KotOR games or one of the other Bioware story games. All the battlegrounds/player housing horseshit is just bonus.

Honestly there still isn't enough to say yes this will own, or yes this looks like shit and I really think it's going to take hands on gametime to make a final decision, especially if you're coming out of WoW. Based on that video alone, "Weird" is the only way I could describe how combat looks to me.

I'll wait for some beta leak news about core things. Is it fluid and responsive like World of Warcraft? Or is it delayed and plays more like Warhammer and LotRO where the global cooldowns seem to be your worst enemy.

P.S.

That HUD UI gots to go.
