If a banned person comes back with a different account, behaves him/herself, and convinces you that he/she is a different person for any serious length of time... I'd say the ban served its purpose. It neutralized a disruptive force on the boards. To continue persecuting the offending person once his new identity is discovered is unnecessary. It seems to me that we're concentrating too much here on punishing people for old sins, when the original problem that led to the ban really has been dealt with.<

Outside of a VERY select few people, I think everyone on these boards has acted in a punitive, immature and heavy-handed way to someone. I know mods say it was much more than the AIDS comment that got xSkyscrasherx banned in the first place, but they also have to understand that it's tough for us Lay-people to understand. I know they see the behind the scenes shit where we don't. I just personally feel that some of the boisterous, over-the-top, assinine comments made by some people who are left free and open to continue posting are due to their status as former members of the 13337 UbEr clique of Lanys, and that reason alone has kept their accounts active. I know I am a jackass posting, but I don't discriminate or make underhanded comments in doing so. Whether you're Tarot, Leo, Xian, or Joe Schmo poster I will make my stupid comments. Some who get banned offend a "regular' poster and I think that is a HUGE contribution to the reason they get banned. <

Uhgree, the kid didn't visit the forums, the mom did. And she wasn't even a "known contributer," she was some lurker who never posted on the boards. If it had been Austriana or some other person who actually was an asset to the boards, the complaint may have had some merit. But the fact was, it was some no-name who contributed nothing to the boards, yet seemingly had more "power" than the voice of the community. The community, almost as a whole, thought the treatment of Nerro and his sig was pretty retarded, yet the panic button was hit, immeditately followed by the proverbial shit hitting the fan. I believe the "sig mod" at the time, Vanamar, was behind the banning (although I am sure the mods will all say it was a group decision). It's the past, but it is still one of those "what the fuck were they thinking" moments.<

Speaking as someone who has earned the ban-hammer in the past and never actually gotten it, I'm glad there are stricter standards now. There seems to be mixed opinion about how evenly the standards are applied, but I won't weigh in there since I'm here like four times a year.

We have stricter standards now? I've always liked this place because of the huge hesitance there is to use the ban hammer. It's rarely ever done these days.

i think the stricter standards are for when to ban people, not stricter standards for forum conduct.

All we really need here for forum conduct is the Don't Be A Dick Rule (which states: "Don't be a dick"). The standards I referred to are of resolve, really -- you can't get unbanned just by sweet-talking one moderator, and that's a good thing. Law doesn't carry the proper force if potential criminals know they can just apologize and leave jail.

I think in Current Events and Rants people should be free to be as dickish as they like.

It appears to me that this is what we generally follow, anyway.

Every forum brings out a dick or two (re. MMO section). Who decides who's a dick or not? Is it by (un)popular vote? So whoever the dominant clique is gets to ban whoever speaks against them? I think we went through this phase already a while back.
