I've got an LG 24" LCD that I purchased back sometime in 2007. The warranty was only 3 years so it's well outside coverage.

It had started showing signs of dying when I'd boot up and it would sit there showing the LG logo, going blank, showing the LG logo, going blank..over and over like it was power cycling. It would then wake up when the windows login screen. I'd see none of the POST text as it was busy turning off and on.

This off/on cycling thing has become longer and longer until today where the computer was done booting and was sitting in windows yet the montior's power light just kept going off and on. It wasn't even displaying the logo at this point, just a black screen. I unplugged the video cable and the power cycling kept going. I unplugged the monitor, waited a bit and plugged it back in. The power light kept going off and on.

I didn't get a chance to connect my old dell lcd to see if that would work but this sounds like the LG is pretty much done, doesn't it?

Might be time for one of those nice Asus 27" ones eh?

Got home from work and tried again. LG wouldn't even power up at first. Otherwise, same issue. Plugged in my 18" Dell, and everything is fine so I'm going to go ahead and declare the LG a dead monitor lol...

Suggestions for a new monitor? 24-27" say, 350.00 as a max price. LED might be nice as it eats half the power as the regular backlight on the LCD's.
I'll be using it for gaming and internet browsing. I'd found a nice 27" Asus LED, but there was a lot of talk about inconsistent lighting on it and washed out colors.

That 27 inch Asus is the one I have and I love it. (I had a 30 inch PVA panel but it's toast so I am pretty difficult to please in regard to monitors).
I might buy 2 more for 3 screen gaming.

27" at 1920x1080 seems like a travesty to me =(

Where did all the 1920x1200 monitors go?

The monitor's dead. There's firmware that displays a splash image while driver stuff, GDI, etc. gets all set up, at which point totally different firmware is engaged for normal operation. It sounds like that switch is failing and being retried, but it's amost certainly an SCR permanently attached to a circuit board.
While you could hypothetically reaplce it, the chances of destroying nearby components is very high -- they're very delicate solid-state things, and heat (like from soldering) can destroy them. Either way, you'll end up spending more time than the monitor is really worth. :?

Thanks for the suggestions =) I ended up going with the Dell U2412M as I'd like to keep the resolution I currently have on it. Now if only dell would ship the effing thing. Newegg would have had the product on my porch yesterday or the day before, yet Dell hasnt even shipped it out yet. It's still "in production".

They say next monday for delivery. Glad I paid for 2 day delivery so it can land on the weekend and arrive a week later. Feh.

lol, same. And I do it on top of the Amazon Prime, prompting mad rage from the wife (who is the most patient bitch on the planet...probably why she's still married to my unruly ass.)

Well, that and the large penis (woot).

I also considered those dell monitors. However I thought if you gamed a lot, you wanted to aim at 2ms-3ms response times on your monitors? Dell IPS monitors have 8ms. Anyone know which is better, if at all?

response time is nearly meaningless nowadays. I've never seen any hint of ghosting on either of my dell u2410s.

To follow that, I never noticed any on the monitor I've replaced either, and that was also 8 ms.

There may be some blur as one is mouselooking at high speeds, but I never noticed it. One thing that was highly entertaining in Modern warfare when I had my PS3 hooked up to it was that I could zoom a weapon in and point at a spot I'd suspect a player might camp and have the distance be so far I had no chance of actually seeing the person..yet I could detect them by the minute shift in pixels in that location lol..

You ever played with a HDTV with a DVI/Analog/HDMI output?

Trying to figure out how to hook up my PS3 to this new monitor, as I realized after the fact that it has a displayport and not an HDMI. I forget what connections the PS3 came with other than HDMI. Component cables maybe.

The colors and clarity on this new monitor are just amazing, loving it. It also doesn't dump massive amounts of heat into my computer room, being that it's LED lit. So far I've only played WoW on it, but it was like logging into a new game.

Pretty sure you had to buy component cables separately for the PS3, unless things have changed. Kinda sucks that you have no HDMI.

Yeah, I was a little surprised that it didn't have one. My fault for not checking in advance but I'd just assumed it would have one as they've become so commonplace. I'm hoping there is some sort of adapter as the monitor has displayport, DVI and VGA. I really *dont* plan on using this monitor for my PS3 as I play on my 42" plasma but the option woulda been nice. I think there are HDMI - DVI adapters, so I could always go displayport on my PC and use the adapter for the PS3.

Still very happy with the monitor regardless. Also, it uses less than half the energy of the one it replaced, so thats a perk.

My Asus laptop only has HDMI output. So I just used the HDMI > DVI adapter for my monitor. Works perfectly well, so go for it.
