Post subject:  Wireless Backup or Auto backup in general
Was looking at a Apple Time Capsule for a wireless backup method, now Im not to keen on the overall of it but its getting to the point now I have pictures / music and important documents that need to be backed up on a semi-regular basis.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should be looking for in a external hard drive and or wirelss back up device.

P.S. I dont care to use Cloud services as that just doesnt seem safe to me yet. (not like i have anything that important, but you understand)

I picked up a 2 Tb seagate external drive that comes with some basic auto backup software. It has worked out really well so far as I wanted to burn my entire cd collection and have it saved in two locations.

The software it comes with is a bit bloated and makes startup a bit slow, but once it does it's initial scan I don't notice it. You'll just want to be specific as to what you want it to backup or it will cover the entire computer....and be scanning and slowing things down all the time.

One backup location isn't enough.

I have a local file server that my system gets backed up to weekly with montly rotating backups with Acronis True Image Home.

I also have a carbonite account that my entire system is snapshotted to.

A single local disk will not save you from everything, it will only help you if your system dies. If you have anything that's actually vital, offsite backups are the only solution.

Windows Home Server box (with automatic client backup) with an external USB3 backup of the WHS + files. Also runs a backup of the more important stuff to Amazon S3 nightly with versioning, encryption and compression.

My backup solution is not wireless, for performance reasons. I have a large storage array, and backing it up over the wireless connection intended for workstation access would saturate the link.

Man, you guys aren't kidding around. I am a simple Dropbox man.

I will echo Vanamar's sentiments: your solution is not robust if you are not using a third-party/offsite solution. They can afford to take precautions you cannot.

get better backup software that lets you specify a bandwidth limit.

or, conversely, get a better wireless network in place. I've never seen my wireless network get saturated (300mbps wireless-n)

I am simple, I have all of our laptops backing up data to an external USB drive that is on my central networked system. I need to look at having that backed up to an external source. I did have an external USB drive fail on me not too long ago (was a WD 80Gig drive that I have owned for at least 8 years). I even took the drive to a data recovery company and they told me the platter was fried.

I highly recommend Carbonite as a "cloud" backup service. $59 per year per computer for unlimited storage.

Just watch out -- if you have caps on your internet (most cable companies and many DSL providers have caps) upload counts too, so you'll need to set a low transfer rate until everything's in sync (for me that took 3-4 months to get everything uploaded, YMMV)

All my desktops (6) are backed up via Acronis TI to a 6TB NAS and the images sent up to my FTP site every month (1 every 5 days). Unlimited bandwidth/storage accounts rock!

Laptops don't get any backups as no one really uses them except for surfing or homework.

Work systems utilize 2 Barracuda backup servers and are backed up nightly.

I will be getting a External Hardrive with some backup sofware, and I will look at Carbonite the $59.99 a year is pretty affordable!

- carbonite $50/yr unlimited (currently have 62Gig backed up)
- external usb drive for a local copy

I added carbonite online when I realized, if the house is on fire, I'm not going to worry about grabbing the usb drive.

I also use to copy our pics/files across 2 laptops and the usb drive, but stopped after carbonite. I like that it's simple file copy, I tried mozy, but it did this package compression, would glitch and start all over with a large package. carbonite just pushes compressed individual files encrypted, and I can access them all remotely.
