Working on a friends computer and am pretty much out of ideas. It's an ancient presario with media center 2005 on it. At some point for her it stopped burning disks.

When i got it the Drive itself wasn't even showing up in My Computer, but was visible in device manager with (!). I've since gotten it to appear properly and the "burn disk to drive" option has reappeared.

It still will not recognize blank media or data burned onto recordable media. Regulzar cds like install cds and whatnot work fine.

I've disabled, removed, uninstalled. I've redone drivers..etc. From what I can find on the net it's some sort of fairly common registry issue but so far none of the fixes I've come across seem to work.

Microsoft was useless and HP/compaq are outsourced and unintelligible on the phone.

Ideas? I was going to redo windows but shes got somewhere in the range of 25gigs of pictures and documents she wants to keep. I've got a 16g flash drive I can use for some of the backup but not all of it and I obviously can't burn the stuff onto dvds lol

Did you try getting a new drive?

The laser is out of alignment and/or busted.

Time to replace the drive -- good thing that new burners are cheap!

Yeah I was thinking about just hitting up BB for a new drive for her. Problem is they are pretty short on money in the first place, and she's already whining about the 29.00 16gb flash drive I told her to get lol....

But you're probably right on the drive issue as the computer has got to be like 7 years old and sits in a dusty damp basement.

Yea, can't be more than like 20-30 bucks.

Yeah it was a bad drive. I shoulda thought of that right off the bat, lol...just shows I need to fix more puters more frequently. Getting rusty.

I remembered I had an old tower and tried that dvd rom. Worked perfectly.

She ended up spending 50 bucks on a nice LG drive. The cheapest one I could find in the area was 44 bucks.

Run the fix for the Sony rootkit before you install another drive in that thing.
