Ok, so I've had a quick launch bar forever in windows 7. I boot back up after being on vacation and the bar is gone. I go to enable it the way I originally did and the folder shows as empty when I go to "new toolbar", BUT if I go to the exact same location in the explorer browser:

%appdata%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

I get a folder full of my shortcuts that were on my quick launch bar. This is proved by then trying to copy those items to the window that came up when I did "new toolbar" and it creates "- copy" versions of the shortcuts in the same location.

As I was booting up, there were some windows updates that were run. Has windows done something to disable quick launch? How do I get these things back. I HATE the "pin" crap.

Am I missing something obvious here?

Right click the windows taskbar -> Toolbars -> New Toolbar...

Now select the folder your quicklaunch shortcut are "%appdata%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch"

It should pop back up.

It doesn't. It opens a window that is completely empty.

When I go to that same location via windows explorer rather than right clicking the taskbar, I see all my shortcuts in there.

I managed to fix it just now. I moved the "Quick Launch" folder out of the default location (to my Documents folder) and now, for some bizarre reason, windows can see it.
