I'm too much of a scrooge to splurge on a top-shelf MP3 player, but a gift for my sister is another matter. Her 7-year-old iPod died recently and her birthday is this month. This presents an obvious opportunity.

But I find myself a little ignorant to the world of Apple. iPods sound dated with the advent of iTouch, but I still feel a bit at sea deciding between the two. The iPod (160GB) is priced at $250 and the 2nd generation iTouch (8GB) at $200. The 160GB is absurd and my sister could never use that much space. But 8GB sounds potentially limiting (though probably comparable to her old iPod - not sure). For $100 more I can get a beefier iTouch, but I'm not convinced it's worth it.

Thoughts? My sister is not a power user, but she's very capable. I don't know the size of her music library.

Thanks!

depends on what you think she'd do with it.

as a pure music player, the ipod classic is a dinosaur. The only thing it has going for it is capacity for those with large music collections.

The ipod touch (please don't refer to it as an itouch, that's just silly) is basically an iphone without the phone, and that you have to pay for software updates for. It runs every app on the app store, and has wifi, so if there's a hotspot, there's internet.

how big is her music collection? how much music did she have on her old ipod?

These are allq uestions that need answering.

If you want to just get it online I'd go with this

http://store.apple.com/us/product/FB533LL/A?mco=MTA4MzQzMDI

The refurbs come with the same warranty as the new ipods and it's only 250 which puts a 32GB 2nd generation ipod touch at the same price as the classic. Personally even if you were going with the 8GB I would still rather have that the apps are really nice.

I have a Ipond 30GB classic and yet to fill it up. 32gb would be good choice!

keep in mind, she may start getting into movies if you introduce an Ipod Touch to her, and then that 8 GB will sure start looking small.

32gb ipod touch is nice...

Only major upgrades require a purchase (minor bugfixes and whatnot appear to be free)

I've had mine for about 4 months now.

Previously I had a no frills mp3 player and this one is sooo much more useful and I enjoy the extras.
