My stepmom's puter is having all sorts of issues. No viruses I can detect, no Malware...etc

I want to use the built in recovery console to try to repair their windows. Anyone know what this thing does when run? Does it completely overwrite all of their data or does it just repair windows itself. I don't want to run the recovery thing and find it went and completely formatted everything.

From what I recall those disks usually just reformat everything. I'd just google that specific disk to see though.

It's not really a disk, persay it's some sort of recovery thing on a partition.

I think it's just a toolset. You can run chkdsk and fixmbr and shit if you have an issue with boot-up, otherwise it's pretty useless in my experience. Just pop your disk in and format/reinstall.

pull the hard drive, put it in a caddy, and run all the tools from another working machine. AV/spyware/etc, and do a backup in case you do need to format.

That's the thing. They don't come with disks. They come with this copy of windows and a console on a partition. I'd have simply run it and fixed their bullshit while I was there......but i was concerned it was going to format right over all of their crap......and would have to deal with monsrous hissyfits that ensued lol.
