My main PC died today, at first I thought it was the HD but now I'm not so sure.

It has been fine lately until today. It was acting a little slow and like something was running in the background, the mouse would freeze every now and then for a few seconds in a browser.
I tried to run my anti virus and adaware but they were locking up, anti virus did finish the Memory test though.
checked task manager, there was nothing strange running and nothing was claiming system resources.

Reboot... got a no disk error, which of course says dead HD, or dead IDE controller. gave up for a while..
turn it on now and Bios screen comes up but I can't get into settings which suggests dead(mostly) MB.

Any thoughts before I start randomly replacing things or maybe just junk it. It is old but was servicable.

Some other questions...
Are ATX cases still used by new MBs? or will I need a new case if I decide to upgrade.

I am currently using my laptop, Toshiba about a year old running Vista. The screen seems washed out, I decreased the brightness which helped a bit but can not fins anyplace to adjust contrast. Is there a contrast setting somewhere? Vista and Laptops are not something I have played with much.

Thanks

Yes ATX is still the main standard.

Usually on laptops you use the function key and the up arrow key (should have an icon that indicates brightness on the key).

It's the cheap-ass 2nd and 3rd rate vendors components that you initially installed in it.

Please send Venen a PM for a list of 1st rate vendors so you won't experience this problem again.
