My grandmother's computer has some funky stuff going on. I ran spybot and got rid of some stuff, ran McAfee, got rid of something that way, and I want to make sure everything looks clear. I ran HijackThis, but I have no idea how to read these things, so I was hoping someone here can tell me what's what and make suggestions. :p

I think her gfx card might be going bad, which is contributing to the problem, but I want to make sure nothing else is wrong before I suggest she buy a new card.

Thanks for any suggestions/advice!

Austy, we need more details than the computer "has some funky stuff going on" and a list of processes. ;)

What are the symptoms exactly?

Sorry, I could give a little more info... :p

When her computer comes out of hibernation, sometimes it flickers and nothing will appear on the screen. Also, this morning, she had to reboot the computer three times before anything would appear.

Like I said, I think it's the graphics card. I just want to make sure it's not something else first. There was a small possibility something infected her computer a few days ago, but McAfee didn't pick anything up.

Thanks :)

Before anything would appear? Does that mean BIOS, boot up screens, etc.? So, she'd turn the computer on, but the display would stay black?

Or do you just mean Windows wouldn't boot all the way?

Most computers don't display that information when coming out of hibernation in my experience.

Generally speaking, if this is a desktop, why even enable sleep/hibernate?

Your problem sounds like drivers more than anything. Have you tried reinstalling the graphics drivers?

If it's a laptop, the backlight or inverter are probably going bad.

I highly doubt it's a laptop, since Austy mentioned buying a new video card ;)

It is a PC. I've turned off the sleep/hibernate, but like I said, it's my grandmother's computer. I only have so much control. ;)

This morning, when she turned it on, nothing appeared. Complete black screen. I don't know if anything was booting up and we couldn't just see it, or if it wasn't getting started at all. She reboot three times. The third time, Windows finally appeared.

When it was coming out of hibernation/sleep before, it would flicker black and have little colorful lines, but Windows would not reappear. She'd end up having to turn it off and let it "rest" before it would work again.

I will try to update the graphics drivers. A friend is also going to give me a graphics card of his to try out and see if that helps. Problem is I live an hour and a half away at the moment, so I'm having to do this the day and a half I visit her each week. (I'll get the card tomorrow or Wednesday, but won't be able to install it until next Sunday.)

If nothing at all appears when you power it on, it could be one of the following:

* Video card is not seated right. To fix this, pull out the video card and put it back in the motherboard slot. For bonus points, get some compressed air and blow out the slot after you remove the card.

* Video cable is loose. Since it happens intermittently, I would make sure the video cable and power cable to the monitor are plugged in tight on both ends.

* Video drivers. You won't be able to update these if you aren't getting any video. If there's onboard video, try plugging your monitor into that.

* BIOS setting. If the PC does have onboard video, it should be disabled in BIOS if you're using a different video card.

* Video card failing. It could be the card itself is going bad. Like you said, trying a different video card will let you know if that's the culprit. Check the card for swollen or leaking capacitors.

* Short. I've seen the insides of many computers that are covered with dust and dust bunnies. These can cause electrical shorts that are bad news. Make sure the inside of the tower is blown clean with compressed air. This can also result in the intermittent performance you're seeing.

* Monitor. It could also be that the PC is fine, but it's the monitor which is going bad. Not likely, but it's part of the equation.

Anyway, that's some ideas for you to consider. Good luck. :)

Monitor is the first thing I would check. How old of a PC are we talking about?

Dell monitor going bad? Likely culprit here.

No idea how old the computer is. I'd probably guess 3-5 years.

I was trying to use it today, and I thought of the monitor, as well (while I watched it act up). I'm going to bring another monitor with me next weekend.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. :) After I check it with a different graphics card and monitor next weekend, I'll let you know what I find out.

Try another virus scanner. In my experience McAfee doesn't get everything.
Comcast wiped Avast that I put on my mom's computer and installed McAfee, but she was having weird things going on. McAfee was not finding any Viruses, I reinstalled Avast and it found 2 or 3 Viruses.

Edit: Oh yeah, as mentioned above, try reseating the Video card and checking the cable connection before putting in a new card.

If you decide to use multiple antivirus products make sure they aren't running at the same time. That will cause no end of grief if you're using Outlook for your email.
