If anyone is in the market for a 17" gaming laptop...
There are 2 new ones on the horizon...

BestBuy is running a -$100 sale on the new Gateway P-7805u ($1050)
P8400 2.26Mhz cpu, 9800M GTS 1G video, 4Gig DDR3
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp ... 8043606827
The package with router is +$80, coincidently the cost of the $80 router? Not sure how they consider that a deal.

==============

Also available soon is the MSI GT725, with better video and cpu $1350
P8600 2.4Ghz cpu, ATI Radeon 4850 512M video, 4Gig DDR3

Places have it up for pre-order

GPU comparison 9800M GTS vs Radeon HD 4850
http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php ... &card2=566
Delta is about 20-30% faster on the 4850, but most apps dont take advantage of the 9800 1Gig vram vs 512M 4850 vram

Of course desktops will always be cheaper and easier to upgrade, but if you like gaming laptops these are some decent deals.

Oh, yah, but I meant that most gamers prefer a desktop system to do most of their gaming.

well sure, but I think they're targeting people who aren't *just* gaming -- my laptop still mostly gets used for work, but the fact I *can* game on it is a plus.

I actually primarily game on a laptop now. I spent a lot of time traveling and when I'm not I kind of prefer to sit at the couch on my laptop rather than segregate myself from my better half at my computer.

I have to say, I'm starting to be over the desktop model these days. My macbook pro had done pretty well by me for work (unix), play (windows based games such as Prince of Persia, Left 4 Dead, etc), and MMOs (WoW). It is a surprisingly beefy machine, and between the dual boot option and VMWare Fusion for running other OSes, I haven't decided if I am going to build a new desktop once I get back to the US or not.

I gave my desktop away over a year ago - I seriously doubt I will ever own one again.

I gamed on a laptop for years (XPS Gen2) but I never really went anywhere with it. It was nice to have that portability available, but I'm over the whole laptop thing.

With my next computer I'm going to go back to the self built desktop

I've been gaming on a laptop for 1.5 yrs now and wont go back to a desktop. I was spending $300 cpu, $300 video every other year. Instead I spend $1k on a gaming laptop every other year, and I'm not tied to my computer desk in the basement.

WoW doesnt need much, and it can even play AoC, etc on medium.

It's the future of gaming.
