Is this thing safe/recommended to download? I thought I'd read something regarding it being screwed up.

The only screwups happen ify ou have an HP machine and an AMD processor, because it starts to use the wrong drivers for your hardware.

I'm running xp sp3 on my laptop without issue.

Hehe, not an Hp but I do have AMD. Thanks, I'll go DL it.

Btw, what is a malicious toolkit? Norton blocked some sites attempt to install one. Is that like a keylogger, trojan?

Agreed. NOD32. And don't download SP3 from windows update. Download the redistributable.

Redistributable is another word for the Network install version. It's an entire package that has all updates whether or not you need them. Kind of a fail-safe way to install.

And that's available for download somewhere?

What is this Nod32? Can't say I've ever heard of it.

Get rid of Norton especially if you have their security package. Get Kaspersky and Spybot S&D and you will be very well protected without the 400mb bloated crap that Norton installs.

Definitely can't go wrong with Kaspersky either. A bit more user friendly than NOD32 as well.

No, but it still sucks compared to AVG, Avast, NOD32 or Kapersky.

I figure I'd just continue this thread rather than start a new one. I've not done the pack 3 yet, but I've noticed that the silverlight update has tried to install like 15 times now and failed. It seems I can't at the moment use windows update for anything. All attempts to update from it result in failed updates. Odd.

I have to use Norton for work vpn. The Corporate edition doesn't consume that much memory.

Kind of bizarre. I downloaded that full Sp3 like it was suggested. It loaded all of the updates that it had successfully and then hard froze during "the cleaning up" portion. I had to reset and reboot. Took a fair amount of time to boot up and finally got into windows but was running really slow. Lot of delay. I went to Windows Update and I had 15 new updates, so apparently SP3 went through and is loaded now.

Puter seems to be running fine now, but for a few weeks I couldn't use windows update and I had a silverlight update sitting on my tray to be updated but the update would just repeatedly fail. Hell I couldn't even uninstall anything from the add/remove screen that used the windows installer.

Seems ok now however. Thanks for the help =)

In Add/Remove Updates, click the check box that says "Show Updates". Uninstall Silverlight. Go the MS website and download Silverlight 2 Beta 2.

*Edit - If the installer in Add/Remove doesn't work (it might not), download the MSI clean up utility here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

Problem solved ;)

Windows XP SP3 and Vista SP1 both break Microsoft's own Retail Management System, both v1.3 and "Dynamics" v2.0. There is no fix except to avoid the update, so far.

I use Avast and Spybot S&D on my home boxes, and nothing else. Are there advantages to Kapersky over Avast?

I have always found AVG to be sufficient but as Neesha said, you'll probably get different responses from everyone.

I think no matter how you slice it (if you pick AVG, Kapersky, or Avast) you'll be in much better shape than your Nortons/Symantec or Mcafee.

Thanks.

The main reason I was wondering is that when I switched from AVG to Avast, Avast ended up finding a lot of stuff on my box that AVG had never detected. So I wasn't sure if Kapersky had noticably more robust detection databases than Avast.

I have tried installing XP SP3 twice now on my work pc each time I get the same glitch and have had to revert back to the old version.

The problem I get is that I loose DNS, if that is the right term, I can't load any pages by using the URL such as www.lansyboard.com, but I can ping IPs just fine.

The guy at tech support for my ISP told me to just forget about updating this last patch.

The other 4 pc's I have it went off without a hitch.

Any idea's?

that's definitely something wonky w/ your work pc or the way they have the network set up. i'd guess the latter.

Have you disabled Windows Firewall? Also, remove the NIC cards entirely in Device Manager and re-add them after a reboot.
