Last night I left my computer playing a movie through vlc media player and fell asleep watching it. A couple hours later I woke up and turned my computer off. When I woke up this morning and turned my computer on the desktop was zoomed in. What I mean by that is my background image, task bar and the programs on my desktop aren't all showing properly. If I take my mouse to the left side of the screen it scrolls that way and I can see the programs sitting there if I move my mouse up to the top of the screen the task bar disappears but the top of the background image appears ect. I checked my display settings and nothing has changed in there, my monitors native resolution is 1680 by 1050 and the resolution is still set to that.

I'm using a VG2230wm ViewSonic monitor, Radeon 9800 pro, and running windows xp sp2.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling my radeon display drivers and that had no effect. Something else I noticed. My monitor has a message that pops up saying that the desktop should be set to 1680 1050 when it thinks that desktop isn't. That message has been popping up every time that I have reset my computer since this problem started. So my monitor thinks the desktop isn't set to 1680 1050 and my desktop think it is set to 1680 1050. Kind of a strange disconnect between these two things.

Sounds like your (virtual) desktop is the right resolution, but your monitor is displaying a lower one. Have you tried lowering the resolution?

When I lowered my desktop resolution it stopped doing the annoying zooming thing. The monitor continues to pop up an annoying message about best picture quality being at the higher resolution. Also everything is bigger =(

sounds like the movie just crashed and left your desktop in a lower resolution than your monitor was set at... hence it being small and zoomable. this happens in some games to me when my desktop is 1680x1050 and i play it in like 1280x768 or something, and it'll crash for whatever reason. the resolution on my desktop won't reset untila reboot.

Stupid question: have you tried resetting it to the higher resolution, now that it's OK?

When I change the resolution back to where it was it goes back to zooming. When I reset the computer the problem persists through that. Also when I start up the same program I was using when the problem started and put it in full screen mode (either through the full screen button in the top right corner or from double clicking in the middle of the movie while its playing) the screen is still zoomed and the sides of the movie are cut off. I don't think the program itself changes my screen resolution at all but I could be wrong.

Download the latest video drivers, save them, remove your current drivers, run drivercleaner, follow the instructions and reinstall the newest.

Tried the driver cleaner program. Followed the instructions.

Quote:
ATI:
1. Unplug nic card or modem from net or disconnect
2. Remove ATI driver from add/remove programs then remove the control panel from add/remove programs
3. Reboot into safe mode (F8 during boot up)
4. On reboot into safe mode WinXP SP1/SP2 will auto detect and install drivers. Just let it do its thing. If you can cancel out of the auto install hardware wizard then skip the rest and run Driver Cleaner! If you can NOT cancel out of auto detect wizard then...
5. Navigate to device manager->display adapter->uninstall and/or remove ATI display adapter but do not reboot
6. Disable any AntiVirus Software (If you don't disable is than it could give trouble)
7. Run Cab Cleaner (not needed, but recommended)
8. Run Driver Cleaner
9. Empty recycle bin and reboot
10. Install the new drivers and control panel

I couldn't get the computer to start up in safe mode (F8 just brought up a menu to select boot device not boot mode which was strange)

On a relatedish note. I tried uninstalling the viewsonic driver and reinstalling it. The driver cleaner program doesn't have any options for monitors just video cards. when I tried to reinstall with the newest viewsonic winxp driver it wouldn't recognize that I have a viewsonic monitor plugged in. I'm going to see if I can locate the cd that came with the monitor and run that.

You must not be hitting F8 at the right time. Try it a little later.

Vanamar is likely on the right track. Remove your current drivers, then reinstall.
