I need to check and see if it a process is running. I usually just do:

ps -edaf

but that lists all of them. How do I check for a process by name or partial name and wildcards.

Also, there must be profile for each user so I can set a home directory right?

ps aux | grep <processname> or <partofprocessname>

Not sure why you're using the e there.

On a properly set up linux system, adduser will create the user's home directory (/home/username)

I'm not sure why I'm using the e either. That's just one of those someone told me years ago to use that switch and I still do even though I don't what it does switches.

Okay ps aux | grep <processname> or <partofprocessname> works fine. Back to the account question. I'm not making new accounts, I want to change the home directory in existing accounts. I'm guessing it would be in etc/passwd

use vipw to edit the passwd file or you can run into some serious problems.
