I have a Sager NP5720 and it seems that lately it has just been getting hotter and hotter. I bought a laptop cooler and that dropped it by 2-3 degrees. I even take it apart regularly to clean out the vents but the thing seems to get a degree hotter every month. It idles at 41 CPU degrees now but it used to be around 33 idle when I first bought it two years ago. I tried to undervolt it once and it helped a little but i'm not too sure how to do it even more without worry about messing it up. I have read a couple of guides but none of them seem to be all that helpful. So in short, is this normal(Never owned a laptop before and this laptop is pretty much a desktop replacement) and does anyone here undervolt and is it helpful for reducing heat?

Dunno if this will help but it is,
Pentium M
Nvidia GeForce 7800 GTX Go
7200 RPM HD.

Undervolting can cause more problems than it fixes. Chances are any active cooling solutions your laptop has are failing (ie: fans not spinning anymore), or possibly the heatsinks have come loose from the CPU.

I assume you've already done the obvious and blown out the vents with canned air, right?

Yes, i'll have to check the CPU because I know my fans are spinning for sure but maybe not as fast?

What thermal paste did you use, crappy paste can go bad after a while and lose it's ability to transfer heat. Hell even good paste doesn't last forever.

Oh, I don't know anything about laptops, you don't use any paste on the CPU to fan?

You do, but it's not something that the user puts on it since the CPU isn't "user servicable"

i would replace the fan/s, over time they can slow down on some types. a drop of a few RPMs will heat you up a lot.

Pretty much, "hey let's make a computer that the end user really can't do dick all with hardware issues so when shit breaks they have to ship it back to us or toss it and buy a new one."

Thanks for all your help and the fans might be the issue because I always have my fans on full power otherwise if I don't it will overheat so that really could be the issue. I'll look more into it and post back, thanks agian.

Also, Vans right, I never used any paste. Also, the heatsink didn't look or feel lose.

I finally took a look, the middle fan looks like it died and their are black scorch marks all around it, this thing seems like it could be a hazard. I had a similar issue with a Dell Desktop PC and they replaced it even though it was over 3 years out of warranty I wonder if they will do the same but i'm not holding my breath.(Dell called it a safety catch heh)

that is a sign of burning brimstone... damn computer demons.

Where there any marks you could make out like a goat head in a circle or 666?

When I opened it up again I noticed that my graphics card had goat's blood on it but Nvidia said it's working as intended.

Edit - On a more serious note when I was FINALLY able to take this f'n thing apart I found that the source of my problem was a fan that I didn't even know was there, so 4 cans of compressed air and 20 q-tips later I am idling at 34 Degrees with the MAX fans turned off(The middle fan started working again after the cleaning even though it wasn't near the fan/vents I cleaned ??) Remember kids, clean out that "Desktop Replacement" laptop once a month!
