A printer I'm looking at buying only has 2mb of memory. I print a lot of PDF files that are each 4-8mb in size. What are the ramifications of this? I confess total ignorance when it comes to printers.

they'll just take a while between pages to print.

Then you're looking at a high quality laser printer or find one with expandable memory (which, after examination, looks to limit you to laser printers)

I personaly have the Hp Laserjet 2605dn. It's quite fast and has 64MB ram by default upgradable to 320 (+256MB). It also have Ethernet so you can directly plug it in your router instead of using the dumb USB connection. And it come with the duplex option pre-installed so it can print on both side of the page, you will save a lot of paper if you print multiple pages plus it look more professional.

http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopp ... 822A%23ABA

The 2600n come with less ram, its a bit slower too and dosen't have the duplex.

Don't ask me why but it's 409 Canadian$ against 449US$ on http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/ ... MP=AF18258

Do they have a special tax in the US on laser printers?

$60 after rebate, laser, 8mb. Supposedly noisy but I'm used to inkjets, I think I can handle it ;p

Just a passing question... did you bother checking to see how much toner cartridges cost and how long they last before you ordered it?

A laser that cheap still follows the mantra of "give the razor away and charge them out the ass for the blades"

There are generics on ebay ranging from $35 to 45, as well as refills going 5 for $25. I can handle that.

And yes I did look before purchasing. I'm a broke phd student. I don't spend a cent without analysis.

generic toner is a bad idea, fyi.

it usually doesn't have the life that the name toner does, and the cartridges tend to clog easier.
