To be fair, France really is our oldest ally. We wouldn't exist as a country if they hadn't assisted us against the British in the American Revolution.

And they wouldn't exist as a country if we hadn't entered WW2.

Ugh. I hate country dick waving. You didn't contribute shit to "saving France" and neither did I. It doesn't make you special.

All I'm saying is that if the US owed France a debt for helping us during the Revolution, then the US repaid that debt in WW2, it's not dick waving, it's the truth.

That one's harder to gauge. Germany was boned before we entered the war -- Russian casualties would have been even higher, but Hitler could not have defeated Stalin in any event. Maybe France wouldn't have stayed conquered very long. In the Revolutionary War, though, there was no one else; we'd have gone back to the now-punitive rule of the British Crown, and they'd have done their absolute best to stamp out the identity of a fledgling nation and make us understand who's in charge. We didn't have a longstanding culture to hold on to; we, as a nation, would have just gone away.

You guys are lucky, the Brits are tyrants!
