I put Salt on my Melons. Watermelon. Honeydew Melon, etc.

A lot of people I know here in CT never tried it till I showed them.

What do YOU do that your friends might not do?

Well I play Magic: The Gathering. All of my friends think it's a nerd activity, and it is. I play it at tourneys in RL and online, and for whatever reason none of my friends can figure out why I like it.

I just bought Duels of the Planeswalkers on Steam -- are you playing Magic online via some other method?

Good news, Fribs! I got a couple Pauper decks built and am now happily farming the 2-man queues for packs. Weee.

Yes, Magic Online, Vana... I've never played the Duels of the Planeswalkers.

If any of you want to play Magic with me online, my online name is Fribur there.

I warn you... if you get addicted to this game, it can get very expensive very quickly!

I sold a collection of Magic cards with a book value of close to $5k (a full set of beta and unlimited, arabian nights, antiquities and legends) for $500 when I was 19, just to be done with the habit.

It's a fun way to pass the time...but like most cards games, every match is basically determined when the shuffler is done.

Oh, c'mon now. =O

Unless it's a very complex matchup - like control vs. control or something where every decision can have ripples several turns later - the play is simply not deep enough to allow for people to make decisions that decide the course of the game.

That might explain why I've always enjoyed Blue. ;)

heh, I still remember playing with an exact copy of "The Deck" back in the day -- if I got the right starting hand, my opponent never saw a turn and I won in 3.

Most games are that way, there's just more time spent getting to that inevitable result. ;)

I usually challenge people...tell me one time when you really made some skillful plays and won a game because of it.

Not something that was good and just obvious like, "Bolting the 3/3 is a better idea than the 1/1", not something that's just a surprise like, "Hah! He attacked and I had a giant growth in my hand!" but something that a great player might have done that an average player (Not someone who has never played before) wouldn't have that won the game.

well I simply disagree, and the amount of time the same people top 8 at major tourneys disagrees as well.

That, and deck building is also a component of play that you are overlooking.

Usually, people disagree out of reflex, but rarely have any counterpoints to offer.

And yes, lots of pros place in events. They also play many, many more events than the average player and the way the DCI system works, as long as you accumulate QP's or rating, you get as many as 3 byes in every tournament you play in. Of course they place more often than Average Joe who only plays in one PTQ a year when it comes to their area. ;)

Why they feel that giving out byes as a reward for racking up points is a good idea is beyond me.

I will say that what the pros are often good at is staying ahead of the metagame. That's often 100x more important than any play you'll make in an actual game.

And believe me, I'm not overlooking deck building. It's why I prefer limited formats to constructed. Sadly, limited gets really pricey.

As an addendum, I will admit that my recent delving into the Pauper format is probably to blame for a lot of my discontent with the game at the moment.

Being that it's all commons, there's really not much but speedy beatdown decks since small, efficient critters and burn tend to be commons and a lot of the efficient ways of dealing with them tend to be in the uncommon/rare slots.

Since there's (almost) no board sweepers at all and (almost) no multi-target removal and definately none of the fancier control mechanics, most of the games are basically both players frantically playing their entire hand and swinging. Whoever gets the biggest draw WILL win most games.

The deck I'm running now (Gobbos) is faster than most, so I end up getting wins just on virtue of dumping my hand on the board faster than the other guy, but it's neither exciting nor fulfilling to win that way. (Or lose)

Think I might need to get out of the format for a while and try some control style in Standard or something, because this format is really ruining the fun for me. =O

I actually agree with Bovinity -- before the mulligan became commonplace, a bad shuffle/first draw meant you were playing catch up, and playing catch up with the vast majority of possible deck combinations is not a good time.

Darn.

Just barely missed Top 8 in a kinda-large extended tournament last night. Tiebreakers did me in, I guess because one of my opponents dropped after I beat him and another one never showed up for our match. =(

Me and my buddy placed 3rd in a team minimaster Zendikar/Worldwake sealed due a to a stupid bye at PAX east.

We would have won a Worldwake foil UNCUT all rare sheet damnit...

Awesome! Play in any PDGA events? I play casually and some doubles once in a while but one of my friends is huge into disc golf.

I play very few PDGA events. The last one I played was the Minnesota Majestic (this year), I won my division by too much. My rating should be up to about 965 with the next update. Yeah, I guess that makes me sort of like your friend. I play a lot, my friends not so much. I still love casual play more than anything.

Roller skate. I've recently started working with the start up women's roller derby team and will be refereeing with them.
