Made for TV movies should count, especially if Freejack/Postman make the list. :P

Because it was a long time ago and far away!!

In defense of this chart.. I DID see Mick Jagger driving around my neighborhood in an armored minivan the other day, so perhaps Freejack is the lone exception.

Of that list, probably the following would be chronologically possible:

12 Monkeys (2028)

V for Vendetta (2038)

The Fifth Element (2263)

Star Trek (2387)

Everything else seems too futuristic/out of whack for the timeline they suggest (although it gets hard predicting technology too far in the future).

1984 was science fiction?

Jason X not on the list and I'm pretty sure it mentioned a timeline somewhere in the movie.

Either way I don't see the point in defending it as the end-all be-all list of scifi timeline-relevant movies. I'm sure someone could find a few decent movies that aren't on it that qualify.

From the first movie. Neo thinks it's 1999 and Morpheus tells him they don't know the exact date, but it's closer to 2199. The Nebuchadnezzar's plaque say it was christened in 2069.

If the Matrix was in its sixth version, none of those dates could be correct.

Yep. The first Matrix movie, everyone thought that it was the first (only) Matrix. It's not until Neo talks to Colonel Sanders in the second one that he finds out that the Matrix has been "rebooted" six times.

I thought that the machines wanted to people to believe that it was a certain time frame but in reality it could have been hundreds or thousands of years after the fall of man. There were several versions of the matrix with the last version being the one that contains the anomaly neo type character. Its in the last version of the matrix that the real zion has been destroyed 6 times.

The anomaly neo was what caused the crash of the previous five versions. The series wasn't clever enough to have the man vs machine fight itself be a part of the matrix.

The 6th neo brought about the end to the war because the oracle aspect of the machine wanted to give peace a chance.

Which is kind of amusing, really, since it largely means that all the fighting the humans did and all the omg-hero-worship of Neo and such didn't really mean anything.

Yup, 1984 is science fiction. =o

Edit: Oh, and talking of 1984, that list should also probably have George Lucas' THX!
