Well Disney bought Lucasfilm Ltd. in total, not just the film rights. That's like, everything.

No new material will ever be good enough to live up to the expectations of 40 year old men as they cling to their impression of how great Star Wars was through their eyes when they were 10 years old.

This was likely to happen when Lucas wanted to retire he has always been a fan of the Disney Parks and just seems like a logical step. Disney will keep their fingers out of the movies that franchise will create, they want the retail rights !

This is the best thing that could have happened to Star Wars. Just look at what Disney is doing with Marvel movies. They're fucking incredible. Like the Hulk.

Yeah.

Lucas has Tolkien's disease; he thinks up these amazing stories, and then can't tell them worth a damn. Disney took Marvel and then made the Avengers; I'm willing to see what they do with Star Wars before I decide whether it's a good thing.

Yes. Tolkien didn't have enough EXPLOSIONS. He was too busy building an entire world and creating backstories for entire races. What he should have focused on was creating sardonic one-liners for Aragorn. Now THAT'S storytelling.

Doing this is all well and good, but it doesn't need to be in the book that is not about the backstories for entire races. Sure, it needs to exist, but I don't need to read it, because at some point (about 80 pages into The Two Towers) it just becomes bad writing that needs editing.

I liked Star Trek. Something feel fundamentally wrong with the same guy directing Star Wars.

I am clearly in the minority of thinking the entire Marvel thing is "just OK". It's rinse/repeat... tell a backstory, have some flashy villian, kill him. 1 billion in revenue can't be wrong, but I was mostly bored by the time Hulk beat up Loki.

True, I feel Avengers was good but not great... But then again Billions in revenue tells me I am wrong.

Looked back through this and realized I never yelled at Elessar for putting words in my mouth. Dude, my problem is not that he didn't tell stories like JJ Abrams -- my problem is that most of my friends get to the Council of Elrond and give the hell up because Tolkien's writing is too dry, and that's a goddamn crime considering all the work, and depth, that went into that world.
