Johnny Depp may be the weirdest actor alive, just FYI.

He is a normal bank robber on the movie of his that is out right now. :P

This is a Tim Burton movie, everyone in it it's bound to play a weird character, especially in an Alice in Wonderland movie (with the exception of Alice~)

No, I just think that he does what he wants to do and what he thinks will challenge his acting ability. IMO he is the best actor out there right now.

I've been disappointed Jim Carey didn't do more with his career. I LOVED The Truman Show.

Yeah, but honestly, he milked his schtick for as long as he possibly could plus twice that over again. Far more than he should've. I personally find him hilarious, but yeah...the Number 23? Uh huh.

I liked him in The Truman Show and The Majestic. Oh, and Liar Liar is pretty good, though a little bit more what I'd call "classic" Jim Carrey.

Well he did get typecast straight out of In Living Color, but he's had a few good breakaway roles (echoing Truman, Majestic, et al)

As for Depp, I think what I like about him best is as an actor he doesn't seem to chase blockbusters. I'm really surprised he did so much the the Pirates thing, but seeing him trying to immortalize Keith Richards as a near-dandy swashbuckler I figured he was just having too much fun. But I generally like his movies. I even liked Demon Barber and I downright detest musicals.

Sweeney Todd is one of his best /nod.

Depp is one of my favorite actors, and one of the few actors for whom when I see that he is in a movie, I choose to go to that movie based on his inclusion alone.

Donnie Brasco was great, and Blow.... Benny and Joon too. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was good stuff too. The only movie I can think of that he was in that I didn't necessarily love was the headless horseman one (can't think of the name atm).

So Sweeny Todd was good? Not being sarcastic? lol. I've held off seeing it as musicals tend to annoy me.

I'm not. For every one blockbuster he does that brings home the bank, that is 20 projects he can do that he actually wants to do.

Not trying to be cute, but what are these "projects he wants to do". Sweeney Todd, Sleepy Hollow, Public Enemies, etc. maybe be a bit weird, but they are hardly "art immortal".

Depp's niche is stylized, quirky roles... which is what Pirates 1-3. I think it fits right in with almost everything he's done in the last 10+ years.

The Ninth Gate? Secret Window? Finding Neverland? Chocolat? Ed Wood? Benny and Joon? What's Eating Gilbert Grape?

While I might be the only person on the entire planet who likes The Ninth Gate, several of the above movies are considered by a lot of people to be spectacular films, and not at all the "stylized, quirky role" you're shoehorning him into.

The Ninth Gate was OK, but got a little stupid toward the end when they sorta threw it all together.

And, where did I say his films weren't good? Ed Wood - certainly a quirky, stylized role. That doesn't mean it wasn't a fantastic movie. Same with Gilbert Grape, Neverland - those are very quirky roles, maybe not wildly sylized.

My point isn't that he sucks, my point is that Pirates fit right in with the type of movies he likes to make.

I really liked the Ninth Gate and I think it shows Depp's range better than most things he's done, because he's a bit scummy in that movie.

Caught it on Starz recently, The Ninth Gate was a good film to watch again. First time I watched it I didn't realize the illustrations were depicting the path of his character during the movie.

Plus, I'm surprised no one has mentioned this is bat country...

I loved the Ninth Gate right up until the end, which sucked. It felt like they ran out of money and just went "fuck it, show's over."
