NPR reviewed it yesterday and spoke quite positively. I'm looking forward to seeing it, and I think me and a couple friends are going to drive down to the IMAX theater in Indy if it's showing and see it there.

my favorite part is how they cheated this one into being canon and then went in to extensive detail about how it makes sense under the logic of star trek, just like every completely ridiculous star trek concept

yeah, i'm going to need you to stop posting forever.

also i never said the way it's explained is a negative on the movie, i think it's pretty funny the way they explain it out and point to 40 years of star trek as if to say "oh come on, none of that makes sense either"

I'm getting more excited about this movie looking at rotten tomatos.... it's rare that a film gets up to 96% positive rating there (based on the percentage of positive reviews).

And Tyral... you didn't have to be whiny about this... not a big deal.

To spread the cheer maybe?

Anyway, just got back from seeing this and it was really good. My only regret was
that they brought LN back, he looked and sounded ridiculous.
...

Other than that it was thoroughly enjoyable, the whole theater was laughing at the references anyone who has ever seen the series or other movies spotted or heard.

Casting was perfect other than Ohura(sp) was about a foot too tall and flat chested and checkov was a bit over done. They couldn't have picked a better Scotty IMHO.

Yeah I have to agree Simon Pegg was perfect for that role and stole the show every time he was on screen.

I seem to be in a minority that hated it.

It felt like every actor in the cast was completely chained in tired old catch phrases we've heard a million times before. The only two allowed to break their molds were spock and kirk...and not even really for them.

meh.

Huh. Completely chained in old catch phrases? I recall... two. One each from Scotty and Bones.

I really liked it. I was pleasantly surprised at how humorous it was!

I'm hoping for lots of sequels, and would it be too much to hope for another TV show?

Add me to the minority list. I did not like the film at all, and they can kiss my ass goodbye as a Star Trek fan. I won't have any thing to do with this new version of the whole Star Trek universe.

What a big let down.

Excellent movie. Dragged my wife to it and although she was prepared to be bored, she ended up enjoying the movie as much as I did.

Did you go see it at the IMAX, Fribs? How was it on Imax? I am going to see it Thursday and trying to decide if I want to risk seeing it on Imax. Never seen a movie in Imax but I've heard it can be overwhelming, like a tennis match with your head going back and forth.

IMAX requires good seats.

I had good seats for 300 in IMAX. Not so much for the dark knight.

I haven't seen it yet, but I really hope they didn't try to make it some "new, hip" version of Star Trek. That's the same shit they do to ruin every other remake thing.

I swear, if there's one bit of hip-hop in this movie I will vomit.

There's a club scene at the start of the movie. Just FYI.

It's really not "hip hop" Star Trek at all. I promise. I would NOT have liked that.

I went to a regular theater. I'm going to see it again in IMAX this Sunday.

But, I get the impression it is an alternate timeline. And, the time line did not seem to get fixed.

It's very much an alternate timeline. Spock said as much.

I really hope that there isn't another TV show. Trek on TV is a finished franchise.

While I liked this movie (placing it 2nd among trek movies, behind Khan), there's not really much competition among trek movies. They are all, generally speaking, bad. All of the TNG movies were bad, yet enjoyable. This was actually a GOOD movie. Though I really fear JJ Abrams will poison it -- he eventually ruins everything he touches.

Though at least Rick Berman didn't have a hand in it.

Enterprise was good.

So was First Contact.

The only two Star Trek movies I didn't like much was Generations and Nemesis.

Worthy, your spoiler tag isn't working for me, so I don't know what you said.

Vanamar, with the completely new timeline set up with this movie, I'm looking forward to a new TV show that could re-explore everything with a fresh new perspective. The new series could be a little darker, for example-- something I would definitely enjoy.

I'm about to leave to go see it on IMAX. I'm honestly pumped about this movie, because I very much want to see more Star Trek on TV and in the movies. This could help pull it off!

I actually sort of enjoyed Nemesis, heh. Then again, my favorite Trek villains were always Romulans. I never liked Klingons as villains, and I *HATED* the Ferengi. The Borg were pretty cool too, and were the only reason I could stand to watch Voyager at all.

Enterprise was great up until they actually started delving into the "Temporal Cold War" -- But then, I HATE time travel as a plot device in science fiction, because no one handles it right. Doctor Who is an exception, but Doctor Who isn't "serious" science fiction so I give it a pass. Star Trek has always handled time travel poorly and used it as a bad excuse for continuity issues.

Yep, Worthy, and the alternate timeline was deliberate. It allows them to create an entire new universe, which is why I liked it so much-- it screams, "we're going to continue with the franchise now!"

I also enjoyed that. I agree with whoever was dissing time travel plot themes, but this one was somewhat subtle and did effectively create a new universe to explore - and not just with minor changes. You get the impression that Kirk's future isn't nearly as assured as it was before.

In regards to the time travel, instead of thinking "Time Loop" think "Time Spiral."

Haven't seen the new one yet.

Wrath of Khan disagrees with you and laughs at you, and not because of a fanboy following.
Overrated. Fake Chest.

Don't get me wrong, Wrath of Khan is good, but I think its greatness is blown out of proportion because the other Trek films are so mediocre.

Caught the new one after work - really enjoyed it. Not a "great" film by any means, but very good. They seemed to bring out the best aspects of Star Trek, leave behind most of the bad, and wrap it in a very nice package. I was somewhat surprised by the feel of genuine appreciation the writers showed to the old series without completely pandering. There was so many sublte (and not so subtle) references. This felt like it was written by a complete Trekkie. In a way - it reminded me of how Stallone treated the Rocky remake.

I am sure there are a lot of Star Wars fans who wish Lucas would have handled the prequels with the same affection these guys handled this.

There was a Rocky remake? If you mean Rocky Balboa, I consider that one of the worst films in the history of movies.

Rocky Balboa was the best of the Rocky sequels.

Honestly, the only Rocky movies that were worth a shit were I, IV, and Balboa. The rest were ridiculous and mostly forgettable. Rocky II was just Rocky with a differnt ending. Do you even remember the name of the "bad guy" in Rocky IV? When was the last time you watched Rocky III and thought "wow, Mr. T is one fine actor?" At least the over-the-top aspects of Rocky IV made it entertaining.

Rocky is the best because it really is a classic movie.. but Rocky IV is the best of the rest for this reason:
