Hey Y'all,

If you have read the graphic novel "Watchmen" and are like me you probably thought "Whooo Hooo! NOWAYNOWAYNOWAY!" or "Well, its about time!" when you first saw the trailer.

On the other hand, if you have never read the graphic novel you might have thought "oh, another super hero movie. I think I will take my kids to see that."

STOP! For the love of Baby Jesus don't bring your kids to see it... unless you have read the graphic novel and have decided that you don't mind your kids seeing something that has the most fucked up stuff going on in it. Honestly, if they did it right it should make the ending to Se7en and "whats in the box" look like an Ewok celebration. And Roschach, Dr Manhattan, and the Comedian are pretty ummm.. interesting but damn if you do not want your kids going as them for halloween (especially as Dr Manhattan, but mostly because they will get cold. Maybe you can convince them to go as Blue Man Group).

What I am waiting for is some of the movie critics (that probably haven't read the Graphic Novel and don't know what to expect) to review Watchmen.

If you have a copy of the GN, let your friends and family borrow it (I got my Girlfriend and my Mom to read it and they are now looking forward to seeing the movie). If you know someone that has it, ask to borrow. You will not be disappointed. You might be a little unsteady about somethings, but you won't be disappointed.

Considering it's from the same director that did 300, this doesn't surprise me. It definitely wasn't a kids movie, and it was based on a graphic novel as well.

I really enjoyed that movie, so I'm anticipating enjoying this one as well.

I want to read this prior to seeing the movie. How can I do that without shelling how a ridiculous amount of money for the GN?

I saw the trailer for this while seeing The Dark Knight, and initially I wasn't all that impressed. I had never read Watchmen (and have read any comics in years) but I was aware of it. I really didn't know what the book was about, other than it was darker and more adult-themed than most comics.

The more I had seen of the movie and the hype that started building around it, I became more interested. Two days ago I happened to be in Borders and they had a stack of at least 50 copies of the paperback sitting on a display, so I picked one up ($20, not too bad, and I had a coupon too).

I have to say that I can barely put this down. I'm up to chapter 6 now, and it's just a very engrossing story. At first I was a little put off by the character designs (from the movie trailer I got the impression of Nite Owl being a cheap Batman ripoff, which he kinda is); but the more they fleshed out the characters the more I was able to look past that.

The part that I am enjoying the least so far is the comic-within-a-comic of The Black Freighter. I realize this is supposed to be a parallel for the main story and reflect people feeling's on world events, and I even find the concept of "when the world has real super heroes, the most popular comic books are about pirates" to be novel, but in general it just pulls the pacing of the story down and is kind of a distraction.
On the other hand, I have found the excerpts from the original Nite Owl's autobiography and the other books in between the chapters to be pretty interesting reads.

I don't think there is any content difference between the Absolute edition and the new 2008 hardcover. Both versions should have the story insert extras. The main difference is the Absolute Edition is pretty crazy high quality and is much larger. Easier to read I think as well. It also comes in a slip over case of course, but the difference in the print quality is outstanding.

Givin, they remastered the printing on the 20.00 version too, but the heavier paper stock and archival inks on the superdeluxe version are pretty. I opted to replace my dog-eared copy with the 20.00 version, my friend bought the hardcover 2-foot tall one.

Not bad. I'll have to see it again (in the comfort of my living room) to decide whether I really liked it or not. For now, I'll say that it was fairly faithful to the comic while not coming across as dated or hokey.

I thought the movie was good. Though a lot of things that should have been added to the film were absent, I'm fairly certain we'll see a special edition extended version once this comes out on DVD/Blu Ray. There's one glaring plot point that is messed with that I don't agree with, but the "Hollywood" version makes things a tad more believable for non-fans of the graphic novel (like my wife, with whom I saw the movie).

I'll probably see it again in the theater with some friends (a.k.a. fellow nerds).

I really enjoyed it and the unique spin it gives.

I thought it could have used a little more focus on humor and mystery rather than recreating 300 slo-mo shots.

Overall very good, but will be hard to watch a 2nd time I think,

Edit... Actually, I'm wanting to see this again. I really enjoyed it.
Favorite line:

"I am not locked in here with you. You are locked in here with me." or something like that. Rorschach was brilliant.

boy this was quite a meal of a movie. i enjoyed it a lot, and i can't think of anything that cutting would improve the movie, but sweet lord it's long. i honestly have to say i could have used another 30 minutes if there were a 10 minute intermission in the middle. i also enjoyed the fact that there's very little "this is who the hero is" exposition, as first chapter hero movies have become pretty stale, you're just faced with "these are the guys you should be rooting for."

Very impressed with this film. Not only was it very faithful in terms of the story, the casting was spot on for the main characters. They make it look like the comic was modeled after the actors instead of the other way around.

Cak, not sure if you're reading this, but I was reading a review somewhere that said "300 was notoriously popular in the gay community, and Watchmen will be too."

Just curious - is this a "hot gay film". I seriously don't know a good way to ask that question. I'm being dead serious and can't find a less ridiculous way to ask the question.

I honestly think they would have done better to have him wear some sort of shorts or something, even if it wasn't true to the book. Or the "bikini" bottoms he wore for other parts of it. It genuinely created a situation in the theater where people started giggling about it and it was kind of distracting.

Among gay geeks, yes. Then again, almost all of the people whom I know that are gay or bisexual are pretty much geeks.

The inordinate amount of blue cock featured in the film was unknown to all my gay geek friends when they had interest in seeing it. So the blue cock isn't the draw.

As far as 300 being a 'hot gay film', probably part of the reason films like that are popular among gay people is that there's no heterosexual relationship bullshit to sit through. I know that people constantly talk about 'gay agendas' and all that, but EVERYONE who watches film and television likes to see things that they can relate to on various levels. And while people gay or straight can relate to *anyone's* romance...if you're straight and it's a gay romance you have to 'translate it' into your terms.

Gay people are forced to do this constantly. So when there are films where there is little to no such 'translation' for people, and a higher 'I can relate' ratio, it's going to be popular with that group.

It's why Nazis are such a popular and overused villain. They are purely EVIL. And in films you're pretty much free to slaughter them wholesale because no one is going to identify with the Nazis (and the few who do, no one big is seriously marketing to anyway). Taken is probably very popular (I still haven't seen it, and I want to) because it's a father going after people who have taken his daughter. He's in the absolute right, most people can identify with the extreme love we have for family, and we can watch without remorse as he probably does really horrific things.

Action movies are pretty 'universal' (though often less popular with women, though most of the women on this forum are probably exceptions as geeks because we love action! Woo!), superhero movies are pretty universal, and most cartoon movies/Pixar stuff involves things that aren't specific to anyone, so are relatively universal.

Plus there's a giant blue cock. ;)

There was lots of eyecandy in 300, even if most of it was digitally enhanced. I'm not sure precisely what demographic flaccid blue penis appeals to.

I remember thinking that it didn't actually look very real. It looked like it was computer animated or something. It hung very straight and didn't seem to really move as he walked.

I think I paid far too much attention to the cock. Heh.

Saw it, loved it. Lotta 'Blue Cock'™, but not enough to be distracted by it I don't think.

The only thing was, sometimes when people were talking or Rorschach was doing his journalism narrations, there seemed to be a little too much action going on, you were kind of distracted and it was a choice to listen to the words or pay attention to what was going on.

I DO NOT THINK THIS IS A SPOILER BUT IT MAY BE SO IF YOU WANT AVOID THE POST. :)

No. Dr. Manhatten (sp) is a guy with true super powers due to a research accident. He pretty much has god like powers.

The thing with Watchmen and I don't think this is a spoiler but I'll tag it anyway, is that it examines superheroes against the backdrop of the 'real' world. The 1985 alternative reality it's in exists because of the intervention of superheroes. IE, we didn't lose Vietnam (because we had superheros), etc. So the world is where it is, as a result of that interference.

It ALSO looks at the effect the world would have on these heroes. What would REALLY happen to a Batman like character? Would he eventually start snuffing criminals and go insane?

Dr. M has godlike powers and he's not really human any more. And you'll discover how true that is as the story unfolds. That evolution (not literal, just as in a changes over time way) is also portrayed in a shitload of little things.

He starts off wearing clothing, and eventually doesn't. Why bother, he has no need to. He doesn't need clothing for protection or warmth or anything like that, and since he's not quite human any more he doesn't have any emotional needs to do it either. He only dons what clothing he does for other people.

Hence the inordinate amount of blue cock.

yeah i have to say that after the last few trek movies, i'm interested in this new one. i don't think much of jj abrams, but it looks like this could be as good as the batmans in terms of reinventing a dead franchise. of course, i've never much cared for trek anyway, but still i'll be there for this one.

I was excited by it until I saw this tiny part of one scene. It was Kirk sitting down in the captains chair for the first time. It looked completely over-dramatized, to the point of ridiculousness. This movie is going to suck.

Yeah the new Star Trek film will suck ass. Nothing will replace the original crew on the big screen. And whats up with this James Dean version of Kirk?!?

You know, remarkably similar things were said about Star Trek: the Next Generation before it came out. "They're replacing Kirk with a balding English guy? Scotty's job is going to some blind dude? What's up with the android replacing Spock?" TNG turned out to be a far superior series.

I'm talking about the big screen movies, not the TV series. Star Trek: the Next Generation movies were bad...and they did not compare to Star Trek 2 or 6 at all.

Also, you can't compare a TV series made in the 60's to Star Trek: the Next Generation when it on on the small screen lol

Lotta rose tint. I watched TNG religiously growing up. Today it looks and sounds much like shit. The older series might have predated fire and shows that don't suck. I enjoyed watching the old star trek movies. I even enjoyed TNG movies. They're not classics. They're entertainment. People need to stop deifying trek lore and get on with their fucked up lives. Leonard Nimoy is not a replacement for your childhood dreams.

Back to the Watchmen...

First, what is the explanation for how Rorschach's mask kept moving? I understand the connection to the Rorschach ink blot tests, but, why would his mask do that? Was it explained in the comic?

Second, there was not enough of HER:

Not the best picture, but, for the few minutes of screen time she had, all I can say is, Oh my!

After leaving school, Kovacs took a job as an unskilled tailor. The prospect of handling women's clothing caused him discomfort, and he later commented that the job was "bearable but unpleasant". A few weeks before her murder in front of an apartment, Kitty Genovese ordered a dress from him, made of a fabric created by Doctor Manhattan that used two pressure and heat-sensitive liquids suspended between a layer of latex to create black-on-white shifting color patterns, "always changing, never mixing into grey". When the dress was completed, Genovese was unsatisfied with the design, and she refused to pay for it. Kovacs took it home for himself, fascinated with the fabric. Upon reading of Kitty's murder in the newspaper, he became disgusted with the amount of crime in New York City and, creating a mask from her dress, became the vigilante Rorschach.

The same Kitty Genovese from one of my favorite movie quotes in Boondock Saints? I did not know this. :)
Quote:
And I am reminded, on this holy day, of the sad story of Kitty Genovese. As you all may remember, a long time ago, almost thirty years ago, this poor soul cried out for help time and time again, but no person answered her calls. Though many saw, no one so much as called the police. They all just watched as Kitty was being stabbed to death in broad daylight. They watched as her assailant walked away. Now, we must all fear evil men. But there is another kind of evil which we must fear most, and that is the indifference of good men.
