Give me your lists, I want to watch some enlightening documentaries.

My favorite would be Fog of War. Consists of interviews with Kennedy's Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara about WWII and Vietnam. I've watched it 3 or 4 times and will watch it many more.

I've heard people talk about Zeitgeist. Any opinions on that one? What are some that stick out for you?

Street Fight is another one I want to mention. It's about Newark Mayor Cory Booker's first attempt at running for mayor. You'll likely become one of his fans after watching.

Yeah I was going to say the fog of war because hot damn.

the scorsese documentaries are real good too - no direction home (the dylan one) and the last waltz and shine a light really isn't a documentary but it kind of is

also basically everything ken burns does/has done

Celluloid Closet is the only documentary I've watched more than once. Not sure how interested you are in seeing how gay and lesbian visibility in film has changed over the years, and the rules by which we had to play to get that visibility (the cowboy "gun" scene from an old western is hilarious or the story about what was REALLY going on in Ben Hur), but it really is a great look at the topic.

I hope you have access to public cable channels where you are Surcam. If you do, be sure to check out the series The American Experience. It's very compelling television, and some of the best documentaries around, especially if you are a history buff. Lots of political stuff as well.

Other stuff you might find on DVD:

Hoop Dreams - one of my favorites, it follows two black high school basketball players and their dreams of making it into the NCAA and eventually the NBA; what an incredible amount of adversity they have to overcome.

The War Room - I would expect someone like you to have already seen this, so maybe you just didn't mention it.....but it follows the Clinton campaign during his presidential run. A good look at the behind-the-scenes politics that goes on.

Roger & Me - I personally don't care for Michael Moore as the years pass, he's become more and more polarizing (imo).....but this movie was pure genius, I think it was his first, and a very biting look at the US Auto industry. Probably a good time to rent this movie, what with the Big 3 asking for more money.

(As an aside....no one should be making a single decision regarding bailing out the US Automakers until they have read The Reckoning, by David Halberstam. This book is an incredible dissertation into how the US auto industry basically misjudged the industry, made large, gas-guzzling cars while it's Japanese counterparts made more fuel-effiencent cars, and how once gas prices shot out of the roof, became nearly insolvent while the Japanese automakers gained the upper hand? The incredible part? This book was written in the 1980s, and was talking about the auto industry during the Carter years....and yet, here we are, over 20 years since that book was written, in the exact same situation. Honestly, once you read this book, you will had little to no sympathy for the people running the US auto industries, since they have deliberately chosen to ignore any past lessons and instead operate on the same greed motives that got them in trouble in the 70s.....but I digress.)

Reversal of Fortune - what happens if you give a homeless person enough money to get them out of their condition? Find out in this documentary where they give a homeless guy $100,000 and see if he can bring himself out of his situation. Incredible. Without giving too much away, this documentary made me as emotional as watching some episodes of Intervention. They also chose who they thought would be a good candidate to give the money to, i.e. they didn't want to give it to a homeless person who was mentally ill or had a drug habit....so in essence they were stacking the deck in their favor......definitely worth watching.

Dark Days - you think you have it bad? This documentary is about homeless people who live in New York's abandoned Amtrak tunnels - real mole people. It's incredible to imagine that people actually live like this in the US.....even more incredible how many of them still can't give up their drug addiction despite their squalor. The ending also tells you what happens to all the people they have been following, which is good if you get emotionally vested ;p

there was a movie about his brother later called stevie which was pretty good too, no he didn't make the nba

i also really enjoy spellbound, and hearts of darkness: a filmmaker's apocalypse is maybe as good a movie as the one it's about (apocalypse now)

Triumph of the Nerds was a little fun for a history of the PC.

It is certainly dated now and not a "power house" documentary.

But, informational and fun if you're a geek.
