I am a huge Metallica fan. I have been so ever since I heard ride the Lightning in 1986. I am excited about the new CD coming out this month.

On the Metallica.com site they have been previewing the release. They have released three full songs so far and I really like them. This is the album that should have come between Justice and the Black Album.

Here are some songs:

The Day That Never Comes (was on ESPN as the music background to Top Plays):

My Apocalypse:

Cyanide (Song they played at the Aug 9 Ozzfest in Dallas):

Also there is a "30 Second Preview" of all the songs that was compiled from the WalMart site:

I REALLY like The Day That Never Comes. I have that one playing in high rotation on my list.

On a related note, AC/DC is set to release a new album soon.

Now that, should kick ass (so far what I've heard is good)

"One" was their best song IMHO. The slow building tension, then towards the end where they go crazy on the guitar... win.

After giving the album a listen, I can say this... it's better than St. Anger.

Then again, I could wipe my ass with the liner notes and it would be better than St Anger.

For sucking, they wouldn't get downloaded at all. This is what they get for making music you like, but being vulnerable to piracy on the Internet. The rationalization that they suck should have applied when you made the decision to download it in the first place, but for some reason it's only exercised when the bill arrives.

I d/l'ed it. Not as great as Master/Ride/Justice but I like it a lot better than Load/Reload. I do like it, I will go buy it as soon as it is out.

Nothing is as good as those 3. Thinking they will ever attain that level of greatness again is false hope. What they have put out right now is quality product.

I loved St. Anger. It was their best album since Master of Puppets. A couple songs were "blah", but Frantic, St. Anger, Unnamed Feeling, Invisible Kid, Shoot Me Again - rocked.

The Day That Never Comes is "Until It Sleeps" without being catchy :(

Love Metallica, but starting to get nervous that this album is going to be another Reload.

just got back from the store to get the CD. (Woot $8.88 at Wal Mart)

I had listened to the d/l several times and really like it. The CD is better, you can really feel Trujillo on the bass.

I have to put it up above the Black Album.

I just got a copy... and I'm a little stunned.
MUCH better than expected.

It sounds like the album that should have come after AJFA.

Cyanide and Judas Kiss have a very MOP feel and are easily the best tracks on the album
Unforgiven III is a little drawn out, but has its moments.
The Day That Never Comes is growing on me some.

The other songs are a little haphazard, and I haven't really gien them all a full listen.

Overall, I'm stunned. Cyanide and Judas Kiss alone make the album worth copying.

I am sorry but this style of Metal makes my throat hurt. I can't stand when the "lead vocal" is growling into the mic. I guess living with a piano/voice teacher has lead to my change in opinion of that style.

The music in that vid was not bad, if you remove the "vocals" it sounds like Dreamtheater with a harder edge.

Those guys have incredible vocal power. Not all screaming / singing is bad like that if you know how to do it correctly. There are "right" ways and "wrong" ways when it comes to singing like that.

Yeah, but it's still a matter of preference. If you don't like it, it doesn't matter if it's done "wrong" or "right"

Yeah, but I was going more off his comment about how living with a piano/voice teacher. That kind of insinuates that singing that way is somehow "wrong"

It's definitely personal preference. I don't like it TOO much, it's part of the reason I hate Metalocalypse, I can't stand the vocals even though the music is decent.

That shit is a bad Pantera knock-off. I must be too grumpy in my old age, but I'll never understand how anyone likes that screaming shit. If they came before Pantera, they still suck.

The problem is that you can't really compare later stuff with earlier stuff - it's a whole different era and attitude. Metallica defined a genre of music with their first 3 albums. Justice and Black basically redefined metal again and brought it to the mainstream. For the Load-Anger era, they had a lull.

Frankly, I thought St. Anger was an innovative album that unfortunately failed.

Death Magnetic is basically revisiting their roots, and it is good - although it does little new.

I can choke down a little Pantera now and then... but the screaming, it just ruins it - much like the bad snare drum in St. Anger ruined that album for a lot of people.

* My Death Magnetic Review *

Now that I've managed to digest the entire album, here's my breakdown.
In general, I am not pleased with the vocals - they feel a bit "muted" or something. There is a bit of weirdness to the mix. But, I can get over that.

Forgive me on track names, I'm going off memory....

#1 - Just Like Your Life
Intro is too long and annoying. 1:30 before the song starts... make it a separte, easily skippable track please. Otherwise, great song with a distant feel of Battery. B+ tune

#2 - End of the Line
Strong rocker. I really enjoy the refrain. The bridge is decent, nothing special - reminds me a bit of "the Outlaw Torn". B+ tune

#3 - Broken, Beat, and Scarred
My personal second favorite song. Lots of attitude, very catchy, several different, blended rifts. I simply love the refrain "cutting your feet on the ground running... show your scars." Unlike some of the other songs, the lyrics and rhymes flow naturally. A+

#4 - Day That Never Comes
Second to worse song on the album. This song sounds like they took "One" and mixed it with "Where the Wild Things Are" from Reload and put together a horrible, horrible mess. This isn't because I hate slow songs - One owns. However, the light guitar rift and everything in the beginning is just dull. The lyrics are completely uninspired trash. The rhymes are painfully forced and obvious. "Love is a 4 letter word", ouch that's bad. The fast part is predictable and trite, but still a little fun. I've only been able to listen to the whole thing 2 or 3 times. C- tune

#5 - All Nightmare Long
Easily the best song on the album. Love the intro, and when it hits the thrash part - it rocks. This song sounds like it could be on Rust In Peace. I woudl love to hear Megadeth cover it. Unlike #4, the lyrics flow, no forced rhymes or junk like that. A+ tune

#6 - Cyanide
Liked it at first because of a catchy chorus. But, the song bores me a little bit now. It just feels a bit "stock" as Lars would say. B tune

#7 - The Judas Kiss
Was the second song to really catch my attention. I like the various rifts and lyrics are mostly good except a little toward the end. I think the phrase "I'm your new god now" should be banned from music. B+ tune

#8 - Unforgiven 3
By far the worse song on the album. Again, it shovels up the absolute worse from Reload combined with simply horrible, meaningless lyrics ("sailed for seas of gold, why's it got so cold" uggg, that's terrible). The fast part feels forced and pointless. The intro is gruesomely long and pointless. C- tune

#9 - Instrumental, can't remember name
It's good and OK. I'm not crazy about it, but it's decent B+ tune

#10 - My Apocalypse
I like it a lot... somewhat a pointless, fun song, but nice. A- tune

Overall, this is a good album with a couple killer songs and a few nice B-sides. I rank my Metallica albums as something like...

Great
1. Master of Puppets
2. Ride the Lightning
3. Black

Very Good
4. Death Magnetic
5. St. Anger (yeah I'm in the minority here)
6. Kill Em All
7. Justice for All

Good
8. Garage Inc.
9. Load

Ass matter
10. Reload

Brian Johnson's voice is so shot; It is painful for me to listen to. I'd rather put in Back in Black or any other classic album of theirs

The goal of recording music is not to simply rehash your previous albums.

Metallica has taken a beating for understanding this.

i hate though bands that change their styles from what they used to be

you can be creative in a certain genre/sub-genre and still play amazing music
