This is my personal top 10 of creepy/gory movies. At 5 I put Saw/Hostel series cause they are pretty much the same thing, just a torture romp, but always cringe worthy.

1. House of 1000 Corpses
2. The Others
3. Misery
4. What Lies Beneath
5. Saw/Hostel Series
6. The Shining (TV Version), sorry, but I liked it better.
7. Silence of the Lambs
8. 6th Sense
9. Poltergeist
10. The Blair Witch Project

Honorable Mention because I am claustrophobic: The Descent
Also, Insert a zombie movie at 11. They all have run together in my head, I don't remember which is which, so I didn't mention any of them. I do like zombie flicks, but they never scare me - I guess I like the 28 series the best.

The Exorcist - I never liked this movie. I never thought it was scary at all. I don't know, it just never, ever did it for me.
Psycho - Same as above

I think "The Ring" should be on the list somewhere.

Salem's Lot and Suspiria are both excellent. For zombie movies, Dead Alive should get an honorable mention. If you like Blair Witch, check out Cannibal Holocaust.

Had to come through and hate on "The Ring". That movie sucked so much.

My #1 is Alien, without a question. I saw that movie when it first came out, I was 11 years old, my mom took me to go see it even though it was R-rated, and I had nightmares for days after that......a good argument btw for the rating system ;p In my adult years, I have never seen a movie that actually has scared me outside of the occasional scene, like the ending of Silence of the Lambs with the night-vision goggles for example, so in fact, there isn't even a close #2 to Alien. When I see Alien now, I can appreciate how the movie sets up the scary scenes (like the guy cooling himself off with the water dripping down from the ceiling, complete silence, and you know the creature is nearby, wtf!), and the movie no longer elicits any sort of visceral response from me anymore......but I still remember how scared I was seeing it as a kid.

EDIT: also, just so you don't think it's only because I was a kid, I saw a lot of movies in my youth. I believe movies like Friday the 13th and Halloween came out around the same time, I saw those also, along with other horror movies of that era, and they did nothing for me. They were definitely scary for a young child, don't get me wrong, but even though I might have been scared in the movie at parts, I didn't have nightmares or think about the movie afterwards, like I did with Alien.

It's funny how sometimes the movies we see as kids are the ones that stick with us as far as the scary goes. I saw Halloween when I was around 6 years old by sneaking downstairs and hiding behind a couch. Heh, that movie scared the bejeesuz out of me. No other slasher flick ever really has, but that one's still kind of fun to see for a bit of a nostalgic shiver.

I liked "The Ring" too. I thought it was decently creepy. Moreso than most movies you can find anymore. I really enjoyed the scene at the end where the kid says "You aren't supposed to help her". That gave me those cool horror movie goosebumps that I only get when they bring out something clever.

Lastly, I don't really agree with grouping Saw and Hostel. I guess if you include all the Saw movies, then yes. The first one could have been a really great movie(if they had cast another doctor) and, to me, didn't really fit the "torture porn" mold. It was a pretty good story with a nice twist at the end. The plot really kind of revolved around the puzzle and the situation, more than the gratuitous violence. The first Hostel, on the other hand, has pretty much one premise. "We capture people, we do nasty things to them, one guy escapes". You could watch that movie on fast forward for all that you care about the characters. I cheered when he ran over the girl with his car at the end, but overall I was really disappointed with that movie. Couple good scenes, not much else.

I don't think any scary movie can top The Shining. I remember posting this exact thing a while back. The twins, the creepy music, Shelley Duvall's teeth, Scatman's velvet paintings of titties, Redrum, Room 237, the dude in the bunny mask... It had [has] it all.

the shining movie scared the ever loving shit out of me as a kid - I really really liked the remake they did for TV though.

Both are very good, I just prefer TV one just a bit more.

even with the opinion disclaimer this is a false statement

the ring was p. good and so was blair witch and so was dawn of the dead but really i can't think of any other scaries from the last 15 or so years that have been much of anything except maybe the first saw movie but they really took a nosedive when they took away the claustrophobia qualities and started making sequels

alien and the exorcist are still real scary too

Silent Hill was decent in that time period. Not epic or anything, but it had a nice creepy atmosphere they did some cool stuff with.

I disagree, the old house in the middle of nowheres was done well, had me wondering what one would find in the various rooms. Also, the cop and old dude in the wheelchair were good and creepy.

It only says that because none of the admins/mods here know how to run the forums. If it breaks the tables then you need to fix it. I just ad-blocked yours though because its gay and you're stupid anyways.

The Shining was excellent, would be in my top 10 of all time.

I remember watching Cujo as a child, and being deathly afraid to go to my grandparent's house because their next door neighbor had a Saint Bernard dog that looked exactly like Cujo did. And the neighbor's dog was just as unpleasant...

Blair Witch Project was probably the single greatest movie experience I have ever had. Then again, I saw it the weekend before it came out nationally, at a sold out audience, where we all believed that what we were watching was actually real and true. After finding out it was fake, and subsequently watching it at a later showing and on DVD... hardly scary at all. The movie itself is not all that great, but at the time when we all believed it as fact in a sold out audience- that was an excellent experience.

Cloverfield was excellent, just came from that. Posted on the JJ Abrams thread of my thoughts on it, but I would rank that up in the top 10.

Halloween does a great job of building suspense throughout, has some pretty jumpy and scary scenes, and the music is probably the best horror music ever created. Sets the mood and atmosphere just right.

The first Saw movie was great because of the ending, and the fact that I don't think anyone knew that is how it would end. If you saw the movie the first time, without any knowledge of anything, and knew that he would walk out at the end... props to you. Most of us did not catch it. And I guess other shocking endings would include Sixth Sense and Usual Suspects as well.

That movie is great and I loved it, but the ending was not a surprise to me at all. When Kaizer Soze(sp?) is speaking at the beginning, I could tell it was Kevin Spacey's voice. Would have been much cooler without that.

The scariest movie I almost never saw was "Magic." I was 7 years old and the preview of the movie scared me so bad, that for the next 2 years, I could not go to bed until my dad searched for killer ventriloquist dummies in my closet, under my bed, in my room, in the bathroom...every single night. I actually refused to watch it until my late 20s, when I finally rented it and closed that horrible nightmare chapter of my life. All I can remember was that it really wasn't as scary as I always thought it would be...but it *was* sort of disturbing.

Funny story about this. Wanted to go see this, but my infant son didn't want to stay with the babysitter, so we decided to accompany our friends to lunch, then bow out when it was time for the movie. After lunch, we rode down to the theater to see when we might find a showing later in the week that we could attend. By the time we got down there, our son was sound asleep, so our friends talked us into going to the movie and just letting him sleep. We agreed, but were skeptical. Things were going great until the last 15-20 minutes, when my son decided his nap was over. The second he started stirring, I knew I had better take him out of the theater before he started throwing a fit and ruining the movie for everyone else. So, I took him outside and he cried pretty much the entire time, so I never got to go back in. When my wife and friends came out after the movie ended, they insisted that I go back and buy a ticket to the next showing because I just "had to see the end, I wouldn't believe it..." I didnt feel like sitting through it again, but they just kept going on and on about how great it was. When I asked what I missed, they refused to say because it would "ruin the suprise!" I said "what suprise? that he was dead the whole movie?"

I guess while I was walking around with my little boy, trying to calm him down, I got to replay everything in my mind. It dawned on me about 2 minutes before they walked out, but I wasn't sure. When they explained that it was such a big suprise, I took a stab at it, and it turned out I was right all along. Btw, I did end up going a couple of days later, just to see it for myself.
