The Wackness Excellent. I wasn't really buying it for the first half and then it got awesome. I didn't care that much about the kid but Ben Kingsley saved/ owned it.

Vicki Christina Barcelona Eh. An attractive cast, and I guess the lesbian kiss was supposed to be a big deal, but still Eh. I over analyzed it (shocking I know) and decided I really didn't like any of the characters that much. Nice scenery.

I saw "Revolutionary Road" today and really liked it--- it's a quite sad movie though.

The Soloist.

Good movie. Perhaps a little too long, as it was a touch repetitive in some spots, I thought. Overall, I quite enjoyed it though.

Moon Awesome. I need to see it again when I'm feeling better (fighting my way back from bronchitis). I think I missed something.
Did they explain the woman he saw in the base? That was just him cracking up right? Someone said it was his daughter

Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone had seen it before (in the theaters heh) and its still fun. Just a cheap fun sci-fi. With Molly Ringwald. Hey its way better then "Metalstorm: the destruction of jared-syn"

Been picking up crappy action movies on Blu-Ray in my still-young journey to bask in its majestic fluorescence. Shoot Em Up is both hilarious and awesome, The Rock is for my money a classic, Lucky Number Slevin is a nice wiseguy movie, Quantum of Solace is a really good action movie but kind of a shitty James Bond movie, Rocknrolla is really not as action-packed as I hoped, but it is packed with Guy Ritchie's hilarious writing. Sometime this weekend I'm going to watch The Kingdom, which is supposed to be actually good and not just Spike TV good.

God. I remember watching Metalstorm every weekend. I couldn't tell you the tiniest bit of the plot now.

Green Street Hooligans - Yes its a bit predictable, but overall amazing movie. It really shows the lengths some people will go to for the love of a sport, makes American sports fans look sissy. I'll have to pick up the dvd when I see it at the store.

District 9

Packed Saturday night theatre- I think my first Saturday night movie in a decade. I despise high school/college kids at the movies cause of all the noises they make... however the theatre was amazingly silent the entire time.

Very intense movie. Very violent/gory. It was nothing like I expected- I won't give away what I expected, or what the plot is about... however, it was an excellent movie.

Great story, great use of introducing plot concepts and information. You really had emotional attachment to many of the characters in the movie, and they really did a great job of making the viewer see all sides of the story.

Highly recommended.

9/10

I was disappointed in District 9. Been a bad movie season so far. Harry Potter was a snoozefest.

I saw District 9 today as well, and thought it was excellent. I liked the way it managed to get me to feel emotionally attached to the main character (that turns into a prawn) when he consistently made me dislike him in the first hour of the movie.

Even at the end he held to his general default position of discrimination.

Great movie. Don't want to say too much to keep from giving things away.

District 9 was indeed awesome. Now if "9" can be awesome as well, it will be the year of the 9s!

I watched Surveillance yesterday. I knew who the killers were instantly. The movie ALMOST crossed the line of not mattering that I already knew how it was going to end, (ie, being about the ride to the end more than the end itself) but never quite got there for me.

Picked up Synechdoche New York because I remembered seeing it mentioned in this thread a couple of times. What an odd movie. Kept me hooked, lots of nuance, very well done in that respect. I felt, though, like they belabored the point just a bit. Toward the end I was pretty well ready for it to be over. The "I get it already" vibe kicked in for me I guess.

Definitely worth a watch, but probably only once.

district 9 is prty good, but i don't think science fiction from the future is what was missing from the serious social issues genre.

a slightly dissenting opinion on the internet about a movie everyone says is incredible that, while having its merits, is ultimately a kind of silly juxtaposition of two things that really didn't need to be together.

Holding a long hard shaft while thrusting it towards and then away from your mouth repeatedly makes you cool?

District 9 is OK but not exactly Godfather 4.

For the first half of it, I was favorably reminded of some of the good original Star Trek episodes. "Hey lets take a social problem and insert aliens as a cypher to talk about it". Then in the second half it just become a splosion fest. A really cool splosion fest but a splosion fest nonetheless. And much of the dude turning into an alien stuff is right out of "The Fly" remake. And their fuel turns you into one of them? Really?

But I still really enjoyed it, I'm just tearing it down some.

hey away we go is on dvd now, and guess what it's really awesome. i guess you probably need a certain degree of hipster douchebaggery to enjoy most of it, but all of the underlying stuff is pretty incredible.

Yeah it's kind of a hipster dbag movie, but it's also admirable in the way Jonze creates this fantasy world that operates on the same logic that a pissant nine year-old does. I think I was most surprised at how the Wild Things aren't adults - they're just like Max in that they don't really understand things and they have little struggles over things that literally don't mean anything.

I really enjoyed it, and I think the biggest reason is that it's completely unlike any other movie I've ever seen, except maybe some of the better Miyazaki movies, and even those have kids who are way more grown-up than they really should be. Maybe Japan is just different in terms of the way kids are, but WTWTA seems much more accurate, at least it does to me, as a jerk-ass American.

I saw The Fourth Kind last night and it was interesting the way they made the film. Some people are going to say all the events were fake, other might not ;)

To me, I think it's all bs...I know there could (are) be aliens in this vast universe, but I think it might be worth your time to see the movie for yourself.

Oh I forgot to tell everyone. It's all a fake documentary where 9 men disppeared in the wilderness, and their bodies were never found (that gave them the idea for the alien abductions). You can tell the "real" footage is fake as shit. Nice try, but some people believe it's real it seems lol

Everyone better run if they see a white owl outside your beedroom window!

The Owls being Aliens just reminds me of "Twin Peaks" "The Owls are not what they seem". But I'll probably go see it this weekend.

Paranormal Activity It's so cheaply made it feels like a student film. I did jump a few times, but I kept falling asleep whenever the characters went to sleep.

Awful movie starring Charilize Theron (sp?), Kevin Bacon, Courtney Love, and some no-names. Basically it is a Lifetime movie, and mind boggling bad considering there are named talents. It happened to be on the tube, and I sat there wondering, "how does a movie like this get made?"

OK in the beginning and interesting for a while. Unfortunately, you sit there realizing the mystery will eventually devolve into the standard evil conspiracy and subsequent duel-to-the-death between hero and conspirator(s).

Training Day
Like Flight Plan, it starts out good until you realize it will all boil down to a mostly silly "twist" and shoot out.
It would have been better if Denzel was actually a good guy all along or something semi-unexpected. The only reason I thought he might not be crooked is because they worked so hard to make him seem bad.

Pan's Labyrinth

It was not at all what I expected. I was thinking of a Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland, and this was soooo much more. I'm not going to say it was the perfect movie, and as a lazy American, reading subtitles can get old.

The movie is beautiful to look at, sad, joyous, and different. Definitely one of the better flicks I've seen in a while.

I thought Training Day and Pan's Labyrinth were both excellent, as well as Up.

I saw 2012 last night and enjoyed it.

I like disaster movies where some of the people you care about actually die, instead of making everyone miraculously live.

I like big things being destroyed.

What I didn't like:

1. Three different times we had the airplane trying to get off the runway scenario. On the third time, it got old.

2. Driving the a collapsing skyscraper is absolutely ridiculous. I expect non-reality, but this just went too far.

3. On the first takeoff, why not pull up right away? Why spend another 5 minutes right next to the ground for absolutely no reason?

4. I hate it when everything is suddenly ok in 15 seconds of exposition at the very end. "Oh we were wrong, water is receding fast, a whole continent of people didn't die." Just cheapens the movie. I think it would have been better if it ended uncertainly: we're floating on a vast sea, no end in sight, and we have too many people and not enough supplies. Who knows if we will make it.

5. Forgot his name, but the dad should have died at the climax. It would have made everything more emotionally powerful.

That's all negative stuff, but really I did enjoy it. It was entertaining.

The Last Legion - Well it wasn't so bad. It takes great liberties with History, but it's a decent cast. No better or worse then "King Arthur".

"Monster X Strikes Back- Attack of the G8 Summitz" Wow. That was a really silly giant monster flick. The film makers at least had great fun with the political satire.

Ink : Indie movie. Heavy on the visuals, light on dialogue. Basic story involves beings who give dreams (storytellers) and nightmares (incubus) fighting over a young girl. I actually was quite forgiving of some of the "indie movie mistakes" for the fact that the Pathfinder's scene is awesome and the Incubus are some of the best creepy bad guys I've seen in a while.

Overall, I enjoyed it....for the same reasons I absolutely hated The Fountain. If you need constant dialogue over visuals, you may want to skip it.

If you like any of the older Disney films, it's a much-watch. Really enjoyable flick. It's a little cheesy, but some decent music and nice laughs made it a fun diversion.

rachel getting married and synechdoche new york on dvd next tuesday. you owe it to yourself to get/see both

This has been in the back of my mind since I read this and I kept putting it off. I finally watched Synechdoche, NY last night and holy fuck.

This movie was insane, intriguing, depressing, hilarious, confusing, and poignant all at once. I must own it.

"Son of Rambow" all together now....awww! Although I over analyzed it and decided I really didn't like the one kid that was a bully and a scam artist. The whole bit with the cool french kid was fun.

Next up "Caprica". I'm skeptical.

American Psycho
It was OK and definitely felt a little like Dexter. However, it spirals a little out-of-control toward the end, and while I think I mostly "get it", I hate when movies pull that shit.

Sweeney Todd
I thought it was mostly awful. It had the typical Tim Burton look, but felt mostly pointless and drawn out. I didn't think the songs were enjoyable at all - more like drawn out, repetitive dialogue. When I fast forward through parts of a movie, that's a bad sign.

V for Vendetta

Excellent movie. Long but definitely did not feel long at all. Government, politics, violence, exceptional dialogue. Ideas are not bulletproof. Fantastic job with this film. I do regret, however, that I don't own the DVD with all the special features- I got mine a long time ago on sale for like 5 dollars during some Best Buy holiday sale. Just the bare bones movie, I think there is one "Making of" feature that I didn't watch.

Punch Drunk Love

Another solid film. Some great dialogue, subtle humor. Granted some plot things were not developed well enough, or really didn't need to be in... but overall I thought the film was a very good film. Definitely watchable several times...

Caprica eh it was okay. I missed the whole "new BSG is awesome!" boat so this didn't really do much for me.

GI Joe if you go in with low enough expectations it's actually kind of fun. Come on Arnold Vosloo is in it, that's guaranteed awesome.

21 Grams

It was decent. I wasn't crazy about the way the narrative worked - it jumps forwards, backwards, and sideways. I felt it somewhat cheated the real theme of the movie with a gimmicky, mystery feel. But, it mostly worked. I say this about almost every movie - it could have been 15 minutes shorter and it would have been a lot better.

Overall, good, worthwhile flick.
