CLOVERFIELD IS ESSENTIALLY A REMAKE OF THE 1998 GODZILLA
08.21.07
By Devin Faraci
Contributing sources: Dread Central

Every time I hear something new about Cloverfield or 1-18-08 or whatever, I am more and more drawn to the belief that the emperor has no clothes. We’re four or five months away and don’t have a title for the movie yet, which is interpreted by some online as ‘kewl.’ To me it’s ‘kweer.’

The latest news on the film, courtesy of Dread Central, only makes me doubt this film more. According to a trusted scooper to the site, the rumors of multiple monsters in Cloverfield are true… but only one of them is giant. The rest are smaller velociraptor types that chase our camera-wielding heroes around. Wow, why does this remind me of a Hank Azaria movie?

Oh yeah, because this was part of what made the 1998 Godzilla chug shit.

the rest at the link.

There's a new picture on 1-18-08.com of a chef near a blender. Grab it, and wiggle the mouse back and forth and it will flip over. Anyone here able to translate?

Check out the following links:

http://www.slusho.jp
http://www.tagruato.jp/

(both in English)

They are part of the viral marketing for the movie, pretty cool stuff. They give small clues about elements of the movie. Like the seabed nectar used in the slusho products. Which by the way, is also an ingredient listed on the back of the chef picture.

There's also a picture of the concept art for the monster floating around, but who knows how legitimate it is.

Rugen sorry for linking you that, I was just reading the FoH forums and someone said,

"It's not (legit). That's a piece of fan art created by Washington artist Doug Williams, for an online contest at jjabrams.net. It was submitted on Sep 10."

Hehe. Can't wait to see what it really is!

That is a shame. I was actually kind of digging the "obvious deep sea creature meets Cthulu" vibe.

The first time i watched this I thought the scene with the shadows projected onto the side of the tent was showing big teddy bears attacking someone. I'm sad after watching it again.

Why sad? It's two men in bio-hazard suits holding an exploding woman. That's sort of freaky. :(

Just got back from watching Cloverfield.

It is an 84 minute long film with a lot of tense and suspenseful situations in it. Some good OMG moments, some good audience *gasps* in the film, and quite a few heart pounding moments as many were at the edge of their seats. When the film was over, my heart was still racing... which, to me, is a pretty good sign.

I enjoyed it a lot. Sure, you have to suspend some disbeliefs and not get sick from the camcorder presentation. If you are able to do so, you will find a thrilling movie that you can enjoy. Not the greatest ever... but then again, only 1 movie can be the greatest ever. So enjoy it for what it is, I know I did.

Cloverfield had no plot and the ending was weak (at best). I liked the action, but it could have been a much better movie. I'd recommend it to people just so they could see it, but not because it was a great movie. It had a few cool moments, to be sure, but I wonder how many people left the movie scratching their heads and saying "that was it?" As I said, it could have been a much better movie.

I actually thought it was pretty awesome. Enough that I saw it twice on the same day.

It's not a deep movie, but I do think it's a brilliant piece of work all the same.

I will point out the 3 things I had issue with though....

1) The dharma inititive logo in the opening was highly irritating.

2) The opening says that this was all found on a mini sd card, which makes no sense in the "cut backs" to the previous recording. The characters themselves refer to tape. So why the reference to a mini sd card found in central park? Just a little sloppy.

3) I thought the inclusion of the "origin" of the monster in the last 30 seconds was really kind of tacky. How handy that Robert just happened to be the one to record it. :p I liked that there was no explaining what/where it was from in the movie...to have that right there just ...eh.

To Rugen:

On 2 I just assumed that they had transfered the contents of the tape to a SD card for easier access?

As for 3, chances are it is not the monster. In the viral marketing there is a company called Tagruato, (sister company of Slusho the company that Rob was hired by), and they had a satellite that had some failure and that could be what is seen falling from the sky at the end of the movie.

According to J. J. Abrams the monster has just awoken from a thousand year sleep or something, and I don't remember if he specified but I think the monster has been sleeping under water all this time. So he was probably awoken by the drilling done by Traguato or something.

I really recommend people to check out the viral marketing websites, they are very interesting. Though two of them have been brought down, one by the 'US Government" and the other who knows.

Check this:
http://www.jjabrams.net/showthread.php?t=145

If you don't have time for the first one (and seeing how some websites are down), check this one instead, it's a summary:

http://www.jjabrams.net/showthread.php?t=185

Oh, and for those that didn't stick around for the end of the credits...
http://boomp3.com/m/bd034dfca370

I'm confused by some of the reports saying this audio is "reversed" (I think the mess of cloverfield fans scouring the net for clues misunderstood something and a chain reaction of the game "phone" happened in explaining how this clip was obtained), but the director did confirm that it was said at the end.

So it would appear we're going to get to see more of the battle of the beast at some future point.

The theater I went to was absolutely packed and I was forced to sit five rows from the front. With all the shakey cam I couldn't even look directly at the screen. I had to look at a corner of the room and watch most of the movie through my peripheral vision or else I would be sick. A friend of mine walked out of the theater and went home about 40 minutes in. It was the worst movie experience I've ever had.

I loved this movie, and had no problem with the shakiness from the view thru camcorder

some of the times it didn't make sense why the cam stayed on though.

the part near the end with Hud getting eaten by the monster was awesome, to see and hear the crunching inside the mouth and then spit back out was fantastic cinema, to me anyway lol
