what kinda role do the timings play? 4.4.4.4 vs 5.5.5.5 or w/e, etc.

Unless you overclock, pretty much none. Those are the timings at stock voltages and buss speeds.

In theory the lower the cas-ras the better your performance, but that usually is accompanied with jacking up the voltage from usually 1.8-9 to as high as 2.1 -2.2 but in doing so you generate a ton of heat on your dims and shortening their life.
