I don't even know where to start on that. there's just so much win in this scenario if you hate UT and USC. I will say that I'm glad he's out of the SEC.

The real losers are both ADs. I don't mean losers as in people to feel sorry for. I mean people who have made stupid, horrible decisions. One who took a chance on Kiffin - someone who ultimately made his university look terrible by false accusations and *lots* of recruiting violations. The other AD hired a guy who said recruiting investigations are a "compliment" into a school being investigated heavily by the NCAA. If you're the infractions committee and you have been listening to the talk that USC is untouchable... how do you feel about them hiring Kiffin? My biggest hope is that USC gets hit hard, but I doubt it will. The two biggest headline-makers this year for recruiting violations were Lane Kiffin and USC.

Thinking as objectively as I can: UT was supposed to have several students enrolling early - yesterday. Apparently almost none of them did, and a rumor I heard was that Orgeron advised them not to, that they may have a place at USC. This example highlights to me some of the worst aspects of college football. I hope the NCAA does something about this to protect the student athletes a little more. Kiffin leaving and potentially taking not just the core of his staff but several recruits... really harms Tennessee this close to signing day.

Thinking as a Florida fan: It pleases me greatly to see this happen to Tennessee fans. They went from riding the Kiffin bus and defending his antics to setting mattresses on fire. Karma sucks.

Apparently his dad just admitted that Lane actually contacted USC.

Which, BTW, may be a recruiting violation because January 11-14 is a dead period and no contact with recruits is allowed except to discuss financial assistance. But, given it's USC, maybe that's exactly what they were talking about. Escalades for all!

Although it does provide me pleasure to see UT suffer, Kiffin is a douche-bag. Spends one year at Oakland - fired, spends one year at UT - bolts to USC. What happens when USC gets beat by UCLA for two years? Where will he go from there? He is younger than I am and if is does not win at USC he may be on his last head coaching job.

He did almost beat both Florida and Alabama with a drastically less talented team so I'll give the guy some credit when it comes to coaching. We'll see if that carries over to USC.

His daddy as defensive coordinator will be pretty huge for USC. That is the bigger coup.

Almost beat Florida. Yeah, ok.

And Neesha is right. The coup is the staff, especially if Norm Chow goes there.

From everything that I had read/heard, USC wanted a rock-star type of coach- a big name, one that can get as close to Carroll in name recognition and "celebrity status" as Carroll was. The only "football" description that I had read/heard was that they wanted a great recruiter for the team.

I guess after you miss on Riley, Fisher, Del Rio, Sarkisian... Kiffin *could* be the closest to what they were after. I just say- be careful what you wish for, USC. Sure Lane talks a great game, and granted his under manned team did nearly beat Alabama... but last time I checked, whether you lose by 1 or by 10 or by 45 in college football, a loss is still a loss.

Two updates:

Looks like Troy Calhoun from Air Force will be the next UT coach. Probably a good hire, definitely not a great, makes headlines hire. I'm glad it's not Muschamp, that was a bit scary to comprehend as a Gator fan.

Second, Norm Chow stays at UCLA per some sources. The package deal with the staff is starting to look a little thinner. Wonder who the Kid will try to hire next.

Yeah, great start. Can't even tell the truth about Orgeron's behavior.

Fun reading the USC message boards as the opinion seems to be turning now that Chow is out of the running.

Also fun reading the LA Times sportswriters reactions, especially to the press conference.

http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-sim ... 506.column

Quote:
Was Orgeron trying to outsmart the system, or was it a move that just wasn't that smart? Is this how he does business? Then why did The Kid hire him? Is this the kind of program The Kid wants to run?

Kiffin said he had been flying all day and hadn't had the opportunity to talk to Orgeron, but he said "it's inaccurate," reports that Orgeron had called Tennessee recruits.

I asked for clarification from The Kid because if he hadn't talked to Orgeron how did he know if the reports were inaccurate? Later, of course, we would find out they were not inaccurate.

At that point it was like talking to one of my daughters, caught doing something wrong and when challenged and having nothing to say, it never stopped them from trying to double-talk their way out of it.

The Kid got flustered, waved his hands and began spewing gibberish. If I reproduced a transcript of everything he had to say, it would probably sound like something Garrett said. And since none of it made any sense, I repeated the line of questioning. Again and again.

Yea, such horseshit. At one point, he was asked "you haven't heard this before?" and Kiffin said "well, now that YOU brought it to my attention, I have." As if he didn't know everything that went on before-hand. What a little douche. His wife is pretty hot, though!

What a trip is must have been to for the kid yesterday. Leaving Tennessee where they wanted to burn you to arriving in LA where they think you are the next hero.

Now it looks like David Cutcliffe. Volnation.com is in meltdown. That's a guy who got fired from Ole Miss and spent 2 years at Duke with a record of 4-8 and 5-7.

Maybe Mike Hamilton (the AD) will get fired and they can get Fulmer to replace him. bwahah

You know, the potential for the REAL dream team is right in front of us. You don't even need to steal any coaches, they are all out of work.

Mike Leach - HC
Mark Mangino - DC
Jim Leavitt - OC and Strength and Conditioning
Craig James - Player ombudsman

Man can you imagine. Would also make a great MMA pay per view event weekly. Just put a web cam on practices (and in the utility shed for any players put in timeout) and watch the coaches beat the shit out of the players.

interesting article from the ESPN Ombudsman about the coverage of the Leach issue:

Read the (full story) as there are many details in there that did not get much air time.
Quote:
The conclusion
So, again, the key question: Was the telecast balanced? ESPN thinks it was -- and for me, that is the most troubling aspect of this whole affair. One ESPN decision-maker reviewed the telecast and, admitting his tally was subjective, told me the positive and negative comments about Leach were nearly equal. That may be accurate, at a high level. But the positives revolved around his X's and O's achievements as a coach. The negatives reflected on Leach's character as a man, which is where the balance was required.

That's a critical distinction.

Another recurring thread from ESPN was the assumption the audience had prior knowledge of the controversy. Indeed, some who complained about the coverage seemed to have a better grasp of the nuances of the dispute than those responsible for the broadcast. But it's not the audience's responsibility to come armed with those details. The telecast should have been constructed and executed as if the viewer had no background on or opinion of the Leach affair.

Brutal article in SI about Kelly.
