So my hometown team, Appalachian State, plays LSU tomorrow on ESPN at 11am EST. Typically I don't give a flying fuck about watching most football games but I will be watching this one for sure. With LSU lacking a good quarterback this year and App having one of the best college quaterbacks in the country, I think this could be a damn close game.

It's opening game for both teams, so who knows, we managed to pull it out against Michigan at home and now we've got a shot at LSU in Baton Rouge.

By the way, LSU doesn't have that thug Perrilloux anymore but to say they are "lacking a good QB" is a bit naive.

Some numbers I pulled off App's site.

• Saturday’s meeting is the second all-time between ASU and LSU. In 2005, Appalachian trailed just 14-0 going into the fourth quarter despite dropping a touchdown pass and having a field goal carom off an upright on separate drives in the third quarter. ASU went on to fall, 24-0, marking the last time that the Mountaineers were shut out.

• The setback at LSU in 2005 immediately preceded a six-game winning streak for Appalachian to end the season, culminating with the first of ASU’s three-consecutive national titles.

• LSU is one of only four teams that ASU has ever played that has won an FBS national championship. Auburn, Clemson and Michigan are the others. Appalachian has never played a team the year after it won an FBS national title.

• The Mountaineers return 13 starters from last year’s team (five offense, six defense, two specialists). The Tigers return 16 (seven offense, five defense, four specialists).

• ASU is 12-0 all-time when playing on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU and has won 13-straight nationally televised games.

App State completely snuck up on Michigan last year. I don't think that Michigan gave them any credit, and they thought they could just waltz into the game and win because (a) they are at home, (b) it is a D-2 school or whatever they call it nowadays, and (c) they are Michigan.

I highly doubt, after what happened last year, that any D-2 team is going to sneak up on the road against any D-1 major team... regardless of whom either team is. No D-1 major team is going to want what happened last year to repeat, so every D-1 major team hosting a D-2 school is going to be prepared and ready to go.

Best of luck with App State, but I doubt they are within 3 touchdowns at the end of the game.

The only reason they snuck up on Michigan is because Michigan wasn't paying attention. They didn't become a good team over night, Michigan just saw FCS and went "easy win". That's their own stupid fault. They saw us as a warmup, they paid us $500k - $1 mill to come up there and play them.

The difference is, we've got a big win against a BCS team under our belt and know that we can do it instead of just thinking it's possible.

The only reason we're playing LSU is because Southern Florida(I think that was who it was) backed out after we beat Michigan, we actually spent some time trying to find someone who would play us for our first game.

Do you honestly think LSU is going to make the same mistake(s) that Michigan made last year? I would say that if LSU took this game any lighter than they took the last one they played, they would deserve anything that happened...

Honestly, I think the vast majority of why Michigan got beat was that they vastly underestimated App State.

LSU is not going to be quick to repeat Michigan's mistake.

You said it yourself- Michigan lost because it was not paying attention.

Do you honestly think that ANY Division 1 upper echelon football program is going to not pay attention to a Division 2 or lower school anymore? If you do, then it is you who is fail. And if any D-1 upper echelon football program doesn't pay attention, then they get the potential loss and embarassment that they rightfully deserve.

App State has no chance of beating LSU in Louisiana if LSU takes this game seriously. Period.

So in that case, no D-1 team will ever lose to a 1-AA team again! Please. Michigan lost because they were not the better team in that game on that day. It will happen again to someone at some point and it could happen to LSU this weekend (but it won't). Do you think App state could have beaten Notre Dame last year? If you say, "yes, they could have" is it only because Notre Dame would go into that game and not take them seriously or is it because App State is (was) the better team?

Next, someone will bring out the "nobody wants to win more than them!!#@!" argument.

App State could arguably play in D-1. They probably would have beaten ND last year. They wouldn't be a top tier team or anything, but they could play. Being in D-2 though, and having teams come to games completely unprepared was a huge advantage for them.

I agree that there's a fair chance that it could happen again someday, but I would tend to disagree that it's going to happen for App State again anytime soon. Their cover is blown.

I think Cicely forgets about the term "any given Sunday" and what it means regarding football.

Remember the one week that *everyone* got fucked in PUOSO? All the upsets? All the teams that won that week that shouldn't have?

I think App State would make a good D1 team, it's just a money thing that they don't.

Just like Marshall back in the day. They ended up jumping to 1A and made it to a bowl game their first year, if memory serves me.

We're a 1AA school with a very good football team. I don't think anyone here seriously wants to go 1A.

As far as the rest of it goes, we'll see on the field in the morning.

Ehh.. We all knew Michigan was going to suck this year. Losing to Toledo barely counts.

The spread offense is wonderful if any of your kids know it, and have the skill and speed to play it.

ASU opened in 1885 and is the largest school in the nation (enrollment-wise).

I see where you're going, but academically ASU and OSU are VERY good schools, esp. for public schools. They're both top research facilities in many areas, and ASU has the nations top Business program iirc.

Way more than that, they have something like 300 thousand enrolled, or so they say. The graduation rate is horrible for UoP though. Much like every other "fake" college, Everest, Gateway, etc.

It just shows that we know for certain that there are 300-thousand without a doubt, stupid people in the US. Nobody respects degrees from those places. It's sad when job offers are with the caveat "Please don't apply if you hold a degree from UoP, Everest, Gateway. Thanks"
