Sunny day for Porter: Phoenix rolls out new coach

PHOENIX -- The Phoenix Suns introduced Terry Porter as their new coach on Monday.

The 45-year-old Porter comes to the Suns from the Detroit Pistons, where he served as an assistant coach. His hiring ends a monthlong search for a successor to Mike D'Antoni, who left last month to coach the New York Knicks.

Suns general manager Steve Kerr, who was a teammate of Porter on the San Antonio Spurs, said at a news conference that the former point guard is a strong leader and communicator.

Porter played guard in the NBA for 17 seasons, retiring after the 2001-02 season.

I guess now the question is: Who will Porter's mid-season replacement be?

Avery Johnson has worse shortcomings than D'Antoni ever did imho. He had the same problem, weak emphasis on defense and inability to change with the flow of the game.

Our real problem lies w/ the bench and our depth. We have no backups that are reliable. (Diaw, Barbosa, Skinner -- I'm staring right at you!) We need big help in the draft. If we don't make any moves to help our aging roster, it'll be time for the Suns to set.

We'll have to see how this offseason plays out before we make any calls.

Yeah, he's going to get the Suns to play better defense. He did such a good job of that in Milwaukee.

Heh, it does look like a pick doomed to failure.
