I didn't get a chance to make my pre-Kentucky Derby post. I thought Big Brown ran a hell of a race and should be a strong candidate to win the triple crown. He ran a much longer race than everyone else in Kentucy and still won going away.

Really sad about Eight Bells. She had a great race and would have won if it were not for Big Brown. I think it is stupid that PETA is seeking punishment for the jockey for what happened to Eight Bells (story here). I am not suprised that they would stick their nose in where it is not wanted/warrented. But to target the jockey is low, even for peta.

In the big scheme of things I can see how these horses being forced to run and win races is abuse of animals. On the other hand, I loath PETA and want them to die.

Those horses get treated pretty dang good. They probably eat better than any of us and once they win big their ability to reproduce becomes high demand.

It's just like any other professional athlete except horses perform and push themselves harder than any player in sports today. The fact that they sometimes run themselves to death or injury is a testament to their will to win. If Shaq could perform like that, maybe the Suns would still be in the playoffs.

Eight Belles story is sad.

Big Brown is a beast and is a good candidate to go all the way.

The problem is the horses are racing as young as they are because they want to make breeding time as long as possible. Easier to fuck something up when all the joints aren't done maturing.

Sometimes sad things happen and it isn't anyone's fault. Easier said than believed though, and grief has a way of assigning blame, warrented or not.
