It's official. You won't be playing StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty this year, as Blizzard has moved the release date of the real-time strategy game to the "first half of 2010." No, they never dated it; but they have now.

So there goes their aspirations of having it out for Holiday 09...I think that narrows it down to no Blizzard games this winter.

They cite a major overhaul to Battle Net as the reason for the delay. Though I think it funny because as the article points out there was no "Official" release date until this delay notice.

In related news, this came up also...

Everyone knew that an end of year release was wishful thinking and that sometime in 2010 was more realistic. Sucks just the same though.

Like I said, it makes me laugh more because there was no release date announced for it in the first place...just wishful thinking that it "could" be released this year.

In the end it makes me wonder exactly what Blizzard has planned for Blizz-Con this year since it was assumed by many that SC2 was the major theme.

Throw out the demo they keep playing and making videos of, tie people over for a little while or something.

Maybe they could just release the first half of the human missions as one game, then the second half as another. That would cut down on production time for voice acting and writing and such.

And completely piss off those of us who are slightly annoyed at the fact they're breaking it up in to three games to begin with? Even Blizzard has limited goodwill to burn.

I think the changes to battle.net (whatever they may be) are something that should excite everyone; I'm not expecting much from SC2 in terms of revolutionary (like we've debated about before) but I'm expecting a lot from battle.net.

I never understood why people had such a hard on for Battle.net.

Blizzard claims they want to turn Battle Net into the next Xbox Live I guess. I'll dig up the article where they explain what they're aiming for.

The only reason why I care about Battle Net isn't for SC2, its for Diablo 3. I logged plenty of hours playing Co-Op D1/D2 games via BNet and plan on doing the same with D3.

Why can't everything just be on Steam for PC? I've seen tons of games go that way, it has a good interface. Now you've got Games for Windows Live and Battle.net hopping on board too? Why keep reinventing the wheel?

I really like Steam too. I don't care though how many interfaces there are out there, as long as they're Steam-like. It's NICE not to have to worry about scratched disks, missing a disk...or worse, damned activation codes. Now I buy it, and it's always there. I delete it, and can reinstall it 3 years later if I want. Yay.

Battle.net was great back in the day, purely because it meant I could easily find games online without having to install some piece of shit Gamespy Arcade client.

That's not what nananea was talking about Tarot ;)

Nana was talking about the matchmaking/online play side of steam, not the "I never have to buy discs again" side.

battle.net, games for windows live and steam all serve this purpose, and nana's not quite sure why there are three competing platforms for matchmaking/online play.

The pay with points system is an outdated piece of fuck.

Thanks for clearing that up Van :)

Though not having to worry about round media is nice also, but just a bonus.

To be honest I don't know what, I haven't spent that much time reading about what they hope / plan to offer; makes it all the more exciting if a little naive. I expect it to have some features which are similar to Steam (a good thing) but with a superb match-making system for choosing who I play games with.

Ah my bad. I know with Team Fortress 2 there's a lot of clan run servers, and they always want donations...unfortunately they want too much money IMO. If it was like a buck or two I'd prolly toss in the hat on the servers I play on constantly. But $10-15? Meh. It can be a PITA at times finding a decent server/maps/decent players.

Battle.net...IIRC...was all on Blizzard's end? Just from what I recall it seemed a better matchmaker...but I played on it a lot less since while I love RTS, I suck at it. Great at city building! Then a 7 year old floods me with orcs. T_T
