Over the past week, I've been really getting into adventure games, which I was a big fan of when I was younger. By "adventure games," by the way, I'm referring to the genre of games where the player, typically in a point-and-click style, explores an environment, finds clues, and uses a little ingenuity to solve puzzles and advance. Some of the better known adventure titles include Myst, Day of the Tentacle, the Monkey Island series, and the King's Quest series. Like I said, I had been a big fan, but in recent years MMOs had dominated my game time.

Recently, I've played though Syberia and Sam & Max: Season Two. Syberia is serious and plot-oriented, while Sam & Max happy-go-lucky and comical (actually, it's hilarious). Both were awesome.

And I've just started playing through Season 1 of Sam & Max (probably should have done that before Season 2, oops).

One of the nice things about taking a several-year break from a genre is that, invariably, there are going to be a host of gems to play once you're back from hiatus. For me, they include Sam & Max (Season 1 & 2), Syberia (I & 2), The Longest Journey (I think there's a sequel to this one, too), and Wallace & Gromit: Fright of the Bumblebees (this sounds terrible, but TTG has convinced me they are masters of this genre so I'll give it a go).

Any other adventure game buffs? Recommendations?

If Sierra paid a very small team of Flash devs to remake the Kings Quest, Space Quest and other games in a web-based Flash game, I'd pay for that.

Gran Fandango if you can find it.

Full Throttle.

Day of the Tenticle

Beneath a Steel Sky

Black Dalia

Journeyman Project

Myst / Riven series

Or go oldschool with Maniac Mansion, Zak McCraken and the Alien Mindbenderes

I'll think of some more and list them.

I thought the first Gabriel Knight game was pretty good. Before they went all live action.

A ton of older adventure games are available online as abandonware.

Sites like http://free-game-downloads.mosw.com/aba ... adventure/

I don't think Underdogs exists anymore. Never downloaded from the site above, so your own risk and all that.

It's a charge site now, but of course it doesn't tell you until after you choose a mirror.

Thanks for all the recommendations. Back in the wonder years, I played Full Throttle, Grim Fandango, Kyrandia, and Day of the Tentacle. I'll look into the other ones.

Have you played all of the new Myst games, like Uru, Givin? I heard Uru is, while novel in some aspects (WHOA running/jumping), really frustrating in others and is not worth playing.

And agreed: Monkey Island is paramount in adventure gaming. Space Quest also rocked my world.

I was never really a fan of Myst/Riven those games pissed me off hard.

If you like games like that, and can get it to run, 7th Guest and its sequal 11th Hour were hot shit back in the day. There are websites devoted to nothing but getting these to run on XP/Vista.

I have a giant binder full of games that won't run any longer. Makes me sad.

Oh, and check here too.

7th Guest was the first game that made me break a keyboard. It's great how the game taunts you, and the backstory was interesting for its time.

Monkey Island is worth it even just for Monkey Combat. Great game.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Leisure Suit Larry. Stylistically different, but the same genre of game.

There was a game for the NES back in the day that was fantasy based and revolved around getting items and using them in the correct spots. Each room/area in the game was just a single non-animated image, but things would change or move as you picked up or used items. Anyone have any idea what I'm talking about? The only image I can remember from the game was a dragon's lair in which the piles of gold had all melted together.

7th Guest was awesome. Of course you have Hero's Quest I and II were just incredible. I loved all of those games. I.C.E.M.A.N was fun too.

I believe my favorite two PC games pre-MMO' era were 7th Guest and Quest for Glory II: Trial by Fire. I graduated to Ultima Online, Diable, and StarCraft. Then EQ took over...
