Considering the theme of the WOTLK expansion I expect it's an announcement about it's release date. It won't be a new game, period. They've already announced SC2. Likely, there will never be Diablo 3.

Yeah, I would have too. Starcraft isn't that great of a game, Diablo 2 was decent but the replayable factor was great. Diablo 3 would be cool.

Blizzard recently purchased the http://www.Diablo3.com website. It used to be a fan site, and for a few weeks it redirected to the fan sites new address, and now it's nothing. Seems very likely that it's D3 to me.

As I understood it, Diablo was owned by a section of the company (Blizzard West or something?) that got sold off. So they couldn't bring back the Diablo franchise unless they bought it back, which isn't likely to happen.

'Blizzard North' made the Diablo games, a good portion left to make Hellgate London but the Diablo IP is still very much Blizzard's.

Let's hope the main peeps are still there and have been working on Diablo 3.

So you can eliminate it being an advertisement for SC2 or WotLK...and since Blizzard don't have a creative bone in their collective bodies when it comes to new game worlds and haven't come up with a new franchise in over a decade, that pretty much narrows it down further to Diablo 3 or World of Diablo or Diablocraft or whatever.

Doesn't a Starcraft mmo make more sense than a Diablo mmo?

For one thing, what would be the material difference between WoW and Diablo, other than lore? They are both fantasy settings.

Second, they released Warcraft 3 and then WoW was based on much of the happenings in WC3. With SC2 coming out, I could see them repeating the pattern, rather than a Diablo mmo.

I think it's Diablo 3, personally..

How many other studios have three unique, incredibly successful franchises? Blizzard's biggest hurdle is simply that their games are too popular, most people do not like change.

Not very many companies can pull that off or have pulled that off in the past. But that doesn't change the fact that what I said is true, they haven't had a new franchise/IP/game world in well over 10 years so why would they have one now? With 3 overwhelming popular franchises/IPs/game worlds why all of a sudden would they divert from their winning formula and try to be different? Why wouldn't. Its Blizzard.

Diablo 3 would be cool. As long as it's anything but Starcraft related. A diable mmo or starcraft mmo would be so fucking utterly retarded whoever thought it up or thought it'd be a good idea should fucking kill themselves.

Fourth rune on the blizz site today. I know nothing about their in-game backgrounds tho so damned if I could tell what they mean.

Being that I'm not a huge fan of Diablo, I wouldn't be upset if their next game was all new, however I couldn't say the same about Starcraft. They stand to upset huge numbers of loyal customers by not continuing their franchies; that said here's hoping they're able to add a new universe to their portfolio in the near future.

Yes, they've had a project ongoing for a while code-named hydra. Actually, the conspiracy nerds have put forth the speculation that the 4th rune that has revealed itself today (which apparently has no connection with Diablo, Warcraft, or Starcraft) is an allusion to the moons orbiting Pluto, the outermost being named Hydra.

Blizzard sure are geniuses when it comes to marketing. A considerable portion of the internet gaming population is drooling at the chops waiting for what it is, whilst arguing what is more warranted. Ha.

I was kinda interested in the last big buzz, but Starcraft, meh. I could never get into that game.

This time around, I don't really care, though it is fun to speculate. They'd have to make some radical changes to diablo to make me interested in picking up a part 3. Diablo 2 is plenty for me, and I don't see the need for more of the same.

The whole world stone ending/Mt. Arreat sort of fits in with the ice, so who knows. I explained all the reasons a Diablo MMO, but in general just a game would be perfect timing right now a couple months ago.

Blizzard actually gets kudos points from me for misinformation and fucking with the frothing masses.

They messed up and put Diablo 3 on the message board list, then to cover it up made Diablo 4 so it would like like it was planned. It's so clear that it's D3, that I agree with Given in that the only thing that upsets me now is how long I'll have to wait for it. I didn't even realize I wanted to play a new Diablo until all this hype got me remembering how much I loved D2.

They really are masters of marketing to get me frothing before they even officially announce a game is in the works.

Blizzard is gonna make a Battletoads MMO.

Also, the forum thing is stupid. You can change the address and the forums will substitute what you enter. Blizzard never put up D3 forums, someone just went to the Bnet forums and changed the "2" in the the d2 forums address to a "3" and that popped up. Also works for 4, 5, and 6.

You would think if they wanted to keep it a secret they wouldnt upload all the files up at once.

Most likely. Considering the announcement is tomorrow, I doubt there are that many more frames.

Would be really cool if they showed one more frame on the main site that left it ambiguous, then at the very end of the expo they show that frame and it turns into a video metamorphasis reveal of whatever is behind the ice. Of course, that kind of thing would only be effective if it was a familiar face (Diablo).

More than likely the splash screen we are seeing are screenshots of the video they will be playing that unveils their super sekret announcement. Kinda like the SCII video they played in Korea last year. A mention of previous games, and then the full monty. I expect a voice over mentioning the games by name as the runes flash onscreen and embed themselves into the ice.

Clever, haha.

EDIT: If that's the plan, Bzalthek, it seems like it'd be a new franchise. Is that what you're thinking? Didn't they have a project titled "Meteor" or something in the past?

Well, I know when they were Silicon and Synapse, they created Lost Vikings. And something called Pax Imperia was in development before (I think) getting scrapped. The intratubes tell me those two odd runes are from those respective titles, and the interwebbs would not lie to me.

But yeah, I'm pretty sure they're going to be rolling out a 3rd franchise to join Diablo, Starcraft, and Warcraft. Here's hoping they can do it.

I bet its Diablo III they dont want to rock the boat with something new and risky.

WTF with the winking smiley 'rune'?

Current setup is shit, but I could swear I see astrological signs outside the runes. Will have to look again from home.

The winky smile is basically a "Your princess is in another castle" thing. They're saying "we're not revealing it here, watch the WWI stream."

The things along the edges of the runes were there before, just not completely visible. I think the only thing to be made out of the runes aside from what they themselves represent is the fact that they form a pentacle.

Some people are speculating it's a new race in SC2 that's a protoss/zerg hybrid. That's entirely possible, but I think this much hype for something that minor would be a huge letdown. A WoTLK release date would also be a huge letdown, and would probably be pushed back anyways. Anything but Diablo 3, a Starcraft MMO, or a new IP will cause tons of nerdrage.

EDIT: The most potentially surprising suggestion I've heard so far is the introduction of Death Knights before WoTLK release. While they probably haven't been tested enough yet, that would be a pretty cool announcement and fits the whole "rune" motif on the splash screen.

I'm going to join the new IP crowd.

Diablo is a great franchise, but I don't think its a hype heavy as Starcraft to warrant this kind of fanfare. Who knows. It's also a game they can just say "hey we're making it" and make money. No grand fanfare needed.

I don't buy any Starcraft or Wrath of the Lich King announcments either. Too bland, too boring. These two IPs already had their mega announce days.

I see it going down like this.

Diablo 3? "Yes finally. It will be good for sure....unfortunately we wont hear from it for 5 years now that it has been announced."

New IP? "Oh man another very much loved Blizzard franchise that will be top quality....unfortunately we wont hear from it for 5 years now that it has been announced."

New MMO that is not Starcraft/Diablo based? "I hope they offer a station pass type deal."

New MMO that IS Starcraft/Diablo based? Combine 1 and 3, substitute name accordingly.

New Starcraft 2 info? "Who gives a shit but the Koreans. I don't care about the Kha'aak being a playable race borrowed from X3."

New Warcraft 3 bullshit? "Why? We already perfected the game for you with DotA."

Bloodthorne 2 for the Wii. "Fuck yeah! Finally a game worth buying on this piece of cock console."

I'll go with the early Death Knights theory. Why not? As mentioned, anything outside of Diablo 3 or something new will be met with lots of hate and anger on behalf of the nerd community, so if it's a WotLK release date, I am going to laugh as the nerds cry themselves to sleep on their Starcraft pillows.

It's not going to be death knights. It's already been made fairly clear that they're for WotLK and that starting at 55 is a reward for having a 55+ character.
