Actually, it never actually got "canceled" -- the actors wanted more money, and HBO didn't want to pay. The show actually had pretty high ratings, and is well loved amongst fans.

That's a technicality. Just shows the actors don't give a fuck about the fans.

I have a bit of a love/hate relationship going on with space mode. I got my ass kicked by invading empires the first time around, but I'm doing better this last go round. If its true that they reduced disasters with this patch, that would save a lot of running around from planet to planet. I actually started over and rolled a Scientist. Graviton Beam for ze win.

Frankly I'd be playing the game more, but I blame Warhammer =/

That guy is hilarious.

Honestly, I've bought countless different PC Games over the years, a number of them with SecuROM and other DRMs and have never had a problem due to it.

Good video, but what was the guy's proposed solution for the game industry? =x Eliminate all protection and just let games go the way of Titan Quest?

I suppose mine would be "make better copyright protection that doesn't screw the users", but it's probably going to be hard to eliminate all possibilities where a person gets screwed. There are probably other situations where some random guy has a second CD drive and it screws with the code somehow(I have 2 DVD drives and haven't noticed an issue, I assume it isn't the same).

I haven't bought a PC game since Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory (March 2005), and before that I seriously can't remember.

I believe his point was stop fucking punishing your paying customers.

He says something to the effect of "ya'll can make the games, come up with something that isn't fucking garbage".

Well, if they ended up coming up with a good, secure copyright protection system they'd be selling that instead of the games =) Or that and the games. It's a project on its own, it's not "come up with somethin'!!".

And for the record, I'm still not feelin punished yet.

Good for you! As long as you're happy, that fine.

There are plenty of others, however, who bought a shiny coaster because of computer problems, and there are enough people pissed off at the hidden shit for a class-action lawsuit.

Spore hits 1 million sold:

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13846_3-10054438-62.html

Supposedly 500,000 copies were pirated(none from the noble non-pirating genuine people who buy all their PC games who hate DRMs, I'm sure), and EA says they didn't lose much from that. It's hard to take EA's word for it on that - it probably hurt them some, but they do have a point in that it's hard to believe all 500,000 "copies" were successful fully-fledged downloads of the complete game.

It's no comparison to The Sims at 100 million, but 1 million in less than a month still seems fairly impressive to me for a game with above average system reqs and a game that didn't quite live up to the full hype.

It just seems like if there were that many people ticked off about "shiny coasters" there would be a bit more of a backlash in terms of sales =x

In addition, at least 7 people I know personally have bought the game and none of them have spoken of any problems whatsoever with the game. So we're officially increasing the "Good for you for being happy!" sample size to 7.

I believe this sums it up nicely.

Mariam Sughayer of EA's corporate communications office says, "Stepping aside from the whole issue of DRM, people need to recognize that every BitTorrent download doesn't represent a successful copy of a game, let alone a lost sale," she tells Gamasutra.

That's as good a summation as I've ever seen. In fact, the numbers might look even more bloated due to the same people downloading from different IPs, incomplete downloads for poorly-seeded torrents or cancelled downloads in general, etc. I'm a little weary about how they managed to get that 500k figure in the first place, frankly.

Either way looks like in the long run they'll end up turning a profit on this one.

GameStop's listing for Spore Creepy & Cute Parts Pack is back, and this time it's official. Along with officially announcing today the first add-on pack for Will Wright and Maxis' evolution simulator Spore--10 days after it was spotted in the specialty retailer's online database--EA also revealed the game's first expansion, which will focus on the Space Age.

As previously reported, the Creepy & Cute Parts Pack will be available for PCs and Macs beginning November 18. The add-on will include in excess of 100 new creature-building parts that will fall in line with the titular theme. The parts, available in the game's Creature Creator, include components for the body, as well as paint options, animations, and backgrounds.

EA has told GameSpot that pricing has not yet been confirmed for the add-on pack, but the aforementioned retail space has the game listed for $19.99. Further, the pack can be used with both Spore proper and the retail version of the Spore Creature Creator, released in June.

Spore's first full expansion, which EA is currently referring to as the Space stage pack, will arrive in spring 2009. The expansion will give space-borne civilizations Star Trek-esque teleportation technology, letting players beam down to distant planets and undertake new missions. The expansion will also add in the Adventure Creator, which will let gamers build and share their own missions. EA did not reveal pricing information for the Space expansion.

Spore expans twice
