Solstice-eclipse overlap first in 456 years. The last time the two celestial events happened at the same time was in AD 1554, according to NASA.

I'm not sure I ever understand the lunar eclipse thing.. isn't there one.. every.. single.. month?

Like.. three days long? At the New Moon. When the moon is totally eclisped from the sun by the Earth?

A lunar eclipse is an event that only lasts a few hours and can only happen when in the full moon phase.

a lunar eclipse is when the earth's shadow falls on the moon during a normally full phase. that's why they're rare.

When you see a Partial Moon, it is not an Eclipse. It is just the relative position of the moon compared to the Earth and the Sun you are seeing.

The moon orbit is inclined enough that it's usually (at full moon stage) above or below the earth shadow. It has to be crossing earths shadow and in the full moon position for a lunar eclipse. And similarly for a solar eclipse but for the new moon slot.

In our next lesson we'll discuss how there's no permanently dark side of the moon, and libration.

If you don't want to brave the December chill, or if your weather doesn't cooperate for lunar viewing, we have you covered! A live video feed of the lunar eclipse will be embedded on this page on Dec. 20. The camera is mounted at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala.(Link)
