don't call the cops.

Quote:
Oakland's police chief is making some dire claims about what his force will and will not respond to if layoffs go as planned.
Chief Anthony Batts listed exactly 44 situations that his officers will no longer respond to and they include grand theft, burglary, car wrecks, identity theft and vandalism. He says if you live and Oakland and one of the above happens to you, you need to let police know on-line.

That deadline has been extended to 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Here's a partial list:
burglary
theft
embezzlement

I'm going to play Devils Advocate here and say that this might not be the worst thing ever...

All of those things listed are referring to after-the-fact incidents I'm assuming, which means they're not emergency-level events so there's no problem with the cops not rushing out instantly.

Sorry, some are silly but some like theft and grand theft should be off the list. If my car gets stolen while I'm at the mall, I don't want to have to take a cab home to report it. Oakland is the armpit of the West anyway, so this is really not that shocking.

I wonder if "burglary" in this list counts a burglary in progress, whether it's your home or a neighbor's that you see being broken into.

Or would that be "breaking and entering" which isn't on the list?

Most of it looks - and this is blatant assumption - like it's all after the fact types of stuff. I guess they don't want you calling 911 and expecting an officer to come zipping out right away over a bad check or something.

A few of them seem a little excessive, but I'm sure part of it has to do with him trying to play a little hardball in regards to the potential layoffs. Some scare tactics and all that.

But it opens the door...

This is political scare talk, folks. It's true they may not be able to respond to all of these, all of the time, but the Police Chief's real aim in saying this is to try to fight the impending layoffs.

There's no excuse for living in Oakland anyway, just don't live in Oakland.

I did not live in Oakland, but, I lived near it.
I live in Connecticut now, but, when I was a kid, I lived in Fremont, Calif.

Oakland always has had a bad rap.
