My favorite angle to this so far is that border security knew about it *during* the flight but decided not to do anything about it (like notifying the flight crew) until after the plane landed.

Then again, there are so many totally horrible angles to this. Janet Napolitano needs to be gone, as does this guy you cited.

Serious question:
Which is worse - the handling of this or the handling of Katrina.

I have to admit, I am a bit amazed by the complacency of the administration on this. I understand that we don't want to blow it out of proportion. Had this happened on September 10, 2001, my reaction might be "oh well, there are always going to be nut jobs."

But on any day after 9/11, I would think we should take this very seriously.

Was there any specific reason for this guy to return to HQ? Also, was he "skiing on the slopes" or was he working out of his hotel room making calls and checking up on the situation? I suppose it would have looked better politically, /shrug. More importantly is whether or not there was any potential threat after this. If the guys at the nerve center can somehow confirm that this guy was a solo act and Al Qaeda had no additional operatives working with him, there's probably little reason for him to be there. As we've seen(so far anyway), that was pretty much a solo act.

These days with all the things you can use to connect, the guy probably could've done just about anything that needed to be done from where he was.

This doesn't get the coverage of Katrina because of the hero on the flight. If it had exploded, probably closer to the same.

But I view it as just as bad, personally. While Katrina was a huge failure, the biggest failures were by the politicians. We had days of warning before Katrina and the people in charge blew it off.

With this attempted bombing, the failure was so fundamental, and on every level. Not only did Janet Napolatano say the system worked right afterward, but our counter terrorism, airport security measures, intelligence agencies - they all failed, spectacularly.

Why is not leaving your house when you have been told to leave a failure by people in charge? From what I remember that is all that was talked about for a week.

As for this, until people get over the idea that they can be 100% secure with 100% anonymity and have fits if somebody thinks about profiling this will keep happing. It does not matter who they hire or fire or how much money they throw at this, the same issues remain.

The problem with this situation and Katrina isn't so much that the event HAPPENED - it's the reaction.

The Bush Administration seemed oblivious to how bad things were getting in New Orleans. Quote: "Brownie, you're doing a great job."

The Obama Administration seems oblivious to how serious everyone (but them) take this. Quote: "The system worked."

I think those quotes are mostly accurate :)

It's time for her to go. What bigger priority could there be for her?

<s>Yes, this situation was very serious.</s> It's a fucking blip, what is wrong with you fucking people? It's a lot like bringing a cap gun to a bank robbery and calling it attempted genocide. Seriously?

I've got to the fuck out of this country.
