I'm sorry, but I just find this to be ridiculous. He was nominated for a world view and awarded based on expectation. An expectation which, following the nomination, he has not quite lived up to. To raise that above the nominees who have made personal sacrifice and suffered to make their stand marginalizes the award.

I understand that the award can be pretty subjective, but comparing his accomplishments over the other nominees I just don't see it.

Apparently they're just giviing this away for not much. I agree whole-heartedly Sarissa. An award that actually turns out bad for him as most people are saying, "wtf?". Turn it down President Obama.

I agree with Surcam. While I respect some of what he's tried to do so far in office, he should turn down the award. This is nothing but a celebrity event at this point, and cheapens the Prize.

Hell Frib has done more to deserve the prize than Obama has done. He should turn it down

Yeah, this is kinda silly. He won because of his "view" and such?

Shit, my view is that we should all get free pie and babies should never die. What do I won?

Two fun bits from the Fark Whaaargarbl:

"He got this well-deserved award for keeping Sarah Palin out of office."
"This is like giving Windows 7 an award because Vista sucked so hard."

I have trouble disagreeing with either statement. ;)

An important thing to point out here: nominations ended February 1.

I doubt even the staunchest of Obama supporters would try to claim he'd done something in 2 weeks to warrant earning this.

A serious WTF moment.

Accepting a prize that you don't deserve, instead of saying "Thanks, but I'm still working on it" doesn't affect someone's credibility?

Why couldn't the Nobel people wait until he had done something in the 4 years he has? Hmph!

This was some shocking news this morning, I was like WTF, nobel peace prize?

The smuck has done nothing to earn this award.

He was humbled? What a fucking douche bag.

Errr, he didn't exactly ASK for it, or award to himself. I agree he doesn't deserve it. He got it for being the first black president.

But your statement is fucking stupid, and you're a douchebag because the Phillies lost yesterday. You had nothing to do with that, but you're a douchebag nonetheless.

There is precedence for this though. They periodically use the prize to promote people who "haven't done anything yet", because the prize comes with a lot of prestige. Desmond Tutu, as far as I can tell, didn't do much of anything before he won the prize. Also, he's not George Bush, and that alone counts for a lot in terms of securing world peace to many throughout the world.

Are you seriously equating the work Tutu did on ending apartheid to Obama's couple of speeches about peace? Seriously?

What he's saying is that Desmond Tutu hadn't actually accomplished his goal yet, he was just talking about it when he was given the award.

Sorry, Vanamar but a couple of speeches do not equal convincing the US & UK to stop investment in S. Africa, and that is just one thing he DID accomplish.

What I am saying is simple...

The US has more power to create a more peaceful world than any other nation (it may be because we are involved in more conflicts than anyone else, but that is besides the point).

Our President has made a verbal commitment for peace in a very straight forward way. Not conditionally the way W and other past Presidents have.

If this award does anything to make this happen, I am 100% for it.

Really the only way this makes sense is if they say they'll award it to Obama in three years if he's earned it by then, and if not there's no Peace prize for 2009.

a close friend of mine made a good point:

"The peace prize has been a joke since Yasser Arafat got it - I don't know why people are shocked now."

I think the biggest problem is everyone has their own (usually uninformed) idea of how the Nobel prize selection process works. Awarding the prize to people who haven't actually done anything yet is relatively common. And sometimes they don't even succeed.

What's odd is no one really gives a fuck about it most of the time other than a mild curiosity. When the Olympics go to Chicago, it's a repudiation of Obama from the world. When Obama get the Nobel, it's just some small group of retards who don't know how to give out their own awards.

He is the fourth to win the prize, the third to win it while in office and the first to receive it during his first year in office.

She looks like "WTF am I doing here"

I wonder if the Nobel Prize committee has realized that it is stupid to give an award based on assumed potential and not on actual deeds.

Much like how Al Gore's award is a a joke now too.

Just by getting Bush out of the white house, he did more for peace than anyone else? repairing international relations, and inspiring the world as the first black president.

yah, they didnt seem to have any other candidates.
I think he handled it well, didnt offend the nobel committee, but didnt do an endzone dance either.

Obama admin increasing funding for nuclear weapons. Figured this was the best thread for it, heh.

Quote:
Biden said those steps along with others to advance non-proliferation were essential to ‘holding nations like North Korea and Iran accountable when they break the rules, and deterring others from trying to do so’.

Fun history on this topic: A recap of his speech in Prague to rid world of nukes (which I thought was both impossible and a bad idea), and even a pledge to continue funding the missile shield, which he has already killed after this speech.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/04/0 ... 83221.html

Combine all of the lies with the fact that Iran's nuclear deadlines have come and gone with zero consequences. We're making terrible choices in this area.
