A key U.S. Senate committee will hold a hearing on the military's controversial "don't ask, don't tell" policy on gays and lesbians, according to Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, a New York Democrat.
A New York senator says the Senate Armed Services Committee will take up "don't ask, don't tell."

A New York senator says the Senate Armed Services Committee will take up "don't ask, don't tell."

The Senate Armed Services Committee will hold the hearing in the fall, she said in a written announcement.

I'm curious whether this will be an actual attempt by the Senate to do away with the policy, or whether it's just going to be some "review" that has no effect on it whatsoever. The timing is interesting, though.

If I had to guess this is the Senate's way of trying to push the Administration into suspending discharges pending this review of the policy. I hope Obama does, but I don't believe he will. He seems to be getting a pass on this promise from most.

I'll quote a prominent gay blogger for a good perspective on how I feel about this:

Quote:
To translate this: the Democratic Party, with solid majorities in House and Senate and a Democratic president in the White House refuses to end discrimination against gay servicemembers, who are risking their lives for this country at a time of war. The Human Rights Campaign has no ability to translate over 70 percent public support for a measure into votes (ending employment discrimination against gays has over 80 percent support but HRC is so irrelevant it hasn't been able to get that passed for two decades).

It's vital for the gay rights movement to understand that the Republicans are intent on discriminating against gay citizens at every opportunity in order to win votes from bigots. And the Democratic party's only interest in gay equality is getting gay money.
And another link from something he posted on the same day about the UK.

Nine years after the military lifted its ban on gays, the army has put an openly homosexual soldier on the cover of its magazine.
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/ho ... 62057.html

Holy shit, 9 years ago! And for some reason, I've not read of mass desertions or soldiers putting down their weapons in combat.

Sen. Gillibrand is doing it because she can't get the 60 votes to get past the filibuster. Basically she's doing what she can to up visibility on the issue in the Senate.

I'm pretty sure with Patrick Murphy spearheading House efforts, it could pass (or at least be extremely close) in the House. When the only Iraq War vet in the House is saying that DADT needs to go away, I think that should provide cover for Blue Dogs.

Such a messy subject I really don't know what to say about it, but I did date a man who was in the airforce and he was under the dont ask and dont tell no one ever knew he was gay until he left the forces. I just could not understand how he could be that secretive.

Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-FL) said yesterday that he withdrew an amendment to a defense appropriations bill that would have weakened the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy because of “pressure” from the White House and some “congressional colleagues.” Hastings’ amendment would have prohibited “spending money to investigate or discharge members of the military who reveal they are homosexual or bisexual.”

And right on the heels of it, another meaningless gesture..."Hey, lookie over here! A medal for Harvey Milk! YAYY!!!!!"

I'm sensing a pattern that I'm none too pleased with.

yes, this administration is all about "look at what I say, not at what I do"

He gives a great speech but his actions don't back it up.

Police chased reporters away from the White House and closed Lafayette Park today in response to a gay rights protest in which several service members in full uniform handcuffed themselves to the White House gate to protest "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

People who have covered the White House for years tell me that's an extremely unusual thing to do in an area that regularly features protests.

A reporter can be seen in the YouTube video above calling the move "outrageous" and "ridiculous."

All this does is put it in Obama's court pending the Pentagon's review in December. Meanwhile, more men and women continue to be discriminated against.

I thought this was all about ensuring Congress repeals this the "right way". If all this bill does is put it in the president's hands.... Well then why the fuck doesn't he just sign an executive order right now?

Or at the very least put a moratorium on discharges based on sexual preference in place pending review?

Presumably because he thinks an executive order isn't enough to sway the nation -- or at least, the parts of it that disagree.

You'll never get everyone on board. I hope we're not waiting for consensus before we stop discriminating. We'd still have bathrooms for colored people if we did.

Maybe I chose the wrong way to put it.

Having one person say, "this is the way it's gonna be," is a lot different than having a body of 535 people approve it. Perhaps he thinks (or wants) the credit or blame shared. Or maybe he doesn't think one person should simply be able to change his mind down the line.
