Ok, not quite marry - but participated in a mock wedding. There was no kissing or inappropriate touching cited (unless you count holding hands). The teacher dressed up a bit silly along the girl and they did the wedding in class.

I have to admit... I'm not sure this is horrible. Although, 4th grade seems a tad old for mock weddings, I don't know if I see this as a horrible lapse in judgment. Maybe not the best decision ever, and in PC-world, it is certainly a no-no. But, I'm not sure.

Now, if this dude's a perv with kiddie porn all over the place, I can see that being a problem, but I don't see that in this story.

It's sad that it has come to this. When a person in a position such as a teacher can't even play with and indulge the innocent fantasies of children without people - once again - manufacturing some buckets of mock outrage for some reason they don't even know.

It really does seem like pretending to be outraged is par for the course in our society. I wonder if we're all doing it because we think everyone else expects us to?

You should start a blog about the different kinds of mock outrage.

I'm not outraged by it or anything, but all adults have to be careful of the crushes of children. Not because of 'zomg pedo!!111' but because their feelings can get so easily hurt.

My youngest brother when he was in preschool was best friends with twin boys (they're still all great friends too which is cool). One of the twins had a huuuuuge crush on my mom. My mother is a teacher, she wasn't working as one at that time, but had previously and knew how to handle kids well. She LOVED teasing him about his crush in a nice way, and asking if he was going to marry her when he grew up. He'd draw pictures of them together too it was REALLY adorable. :)

It just has to be handled well.

Was this? Oh I don't know I wasn't there...but seems to have been. All the kids enjoyed it and he didn't embarass the girl. He might have been able to bow out of it gracefully somehow, pleading age or prior committment without hurting her feelings (with the old 'Ah if only I were young again!' or some shit)...but really ...I just don't see the harm.

What if he had officiated over the 'mock wedding' of two classmates, would people go batshit then? I mean...are adults simply forbidden to ever 'play' with kids in any fashion?

My childhood would have been drearier if that had been the case. Adults taking kids seriously means *a lot* to a child...child serious I mean, where they're really listening and into what you're doing. I also learned quite a bit (and nothing inappropriate) from adults letting down their guard and answering as frankly as possible some of my very nosey questions.

After all, children model themselves on the adults that they see and interact with.

Anyhoo unless something major comes to light with this I have to completely agree...it's mock outrage for the sake of outrage...as well as probably some people who are just a LITTLE too paranoid.

I wonder if it had been a female teacher, if we'd see the same shit.

All depends on where the honeymoon was. If they went to Vegas, then yes, it's bad. If they went to the Jungle Gym for an apple juice box, then no it is not bad.

If someone told me that the lanys community would show more reason than most anything else nine years ago, I probably wouldn't have believed it. Paranoia abounds. It sucks that this teacher has been made to regret what should have been a fun and fond memory for those involved throughout their years.
