Quote:
On Sunday, as President Obama was wrapping up a visit to France, the ranking Republican on the Senate Finance Committee — who will play a key role in the consideration of the health care legislation the administration has called a top priority — posted a few pointed comments on Twitter, aimed directly at the president.

"Pres Obama you got nerve while u sightseeing in Paris to tell us 'time to deliver' on health care. We still on skedul/even workinWKEND," wrote Chuck Grassley of Iowa.

Later, he added: "Pres Obama while u sightseeing in Paris u said 'time to delivr on healthcare' When you are a 'hammer' u think evrything is NAIL I'm no NAIL."

Seriously? You're a United States Senator. After seeing his comments and hearing Sarah Palin's speeches, I ask myself, when did the GOP become retarded?

I enjoyed this reader's comment though-

Quote:
Did someone hack this guy's Twitter account? Please tell me we don't have a senator with the grammer and etiquette of an angry 12 year old.

While I'm a registered Democrat, I am a moderate and I do believe in certain Republican issues, but this just makes me lose confidence in their party.

Delivering a concise message over Twitter is an entirely different game than many politicians are used to. Making matters worse, many get bad advice like misspellings and punctuation are unimportant.

That goes without saying...

I guess this is more of the issue of the image problems of the GOP.

It's funny because it's almost like technology has gone backwards in that regard.

Some newfangled device comes out that you can talk on, but what do they hype up the most? You can type to people on it!!!

texting is quick, texting is easy, and it's a lot easier to meet up with people in a crowded, loud area via text than it is via phone. (amusement parks, bars, clubs, sporting events, etc)

Talking is easy. (easier, really)

I used to think the same way. I still do, for some uses (like people I know sending 6-8K a month). But sometimes, a text message is just right. It's good to have choices.

Twitter fosters the further erosion of spelling, punctuation, and grammar so they can fit as much meaningless garbage in the character limit.

It's more than just bad grammar, mispelled words, and crappy abbreviations.

Once you ignore all that, it's just the thought processes that this dingaling has and is tweeting.

Quote:
Memorial Day for me. Bfast w legion Pburg Speak at Services New hford cemetery and Dike HS Aud Legion in charge

What? I understood the first 4 words, then you lost me.
Quote:
Lunch w Obama 3wks ago he told Max and me his desire for biparty HealthCareRefm. I hope he remembr when he meets w financeHELP Demo Tues

Huh? Again, I comprehend the first sentence, but the second sentence makes me think you were having a stroke while typing that.
Quote:
Hv not been able to watch KWWL TV since Feb. When will I b able to get Ron Steele again

Ah, ok. Good to know.
Quote:
Wshed the army a happy 234th bday in a video msg today Thx to all the soldiers paticularly iowans for defnfing our freedom.

Wshed? Paticularly? Defnfing?

This one made me chuckle though-
Quote:
To the Hill reporter who thought I didn't input my own AM Tweet today. Well believe me I did. My Bb is always w me

See, it's not just us! Other people are wondering where the senator's Public Relations staff is!

Memorial Day for me. Breakfast with Legion. Pburg is either the person speaking or the location. Services New Hartford Cemetery and Dike High School Auditorium, both are Legion functions.

HTH!

He's simply trying to work within the 140 word limit. While I loathe txt abbv, at least he's accessible and getting information out there.

Eh. Part of my issue is that I have arthritis in my hands and it makes it a bitch to try to punch out the numbers on a tiny little keypad. Most of the time I don't even respond, or if I really have to I call back.

If you're too much of a pussy to pick up the fucking phone, it's not that important (which it likely isn't anyway). I'll use texts only if I'm in a meeting with someone, or know they're in one. But for everyday use? Fuck that.

Bitches.

Anyone that requires voice to voice contact for completely simplistic conversations that require at best, a few seconds of concentration, and certainly don't need to be wrapped up in fuzzy wuzzy "well, how are you?" bullshit typically reserved for family...

...well, they don't need to be chatting with me anyway. They are firmly relegated to the land of voicemail.

Quote:
it's not that important (which it likely isn't anyway).

Exactly. On this we agree. The amount of time I let people waste of mine before I started filtering them to voicemail was amazing. Phone calls without a point are the my single biggest irritant with the phone.

someone else: "Hey!"
Me: "Hey."
long pause.
Me: "So...did you need something?"
someone else: "Just called to say hey."
Me: "And you've done it. Later."
*click*

Text/email is short, sweet, to the point. No muss, no fuss.

Really? You've never, ever had a phone call that went along the lines of:

guy1: hey.
guy2: sup?
guy1: not much.
guy2: yeah, just chillin here.

I find that hard to believe, but ok.

Straight guys are way worse than women or gay men in this regard, in my experience. It isn't always framed in the "just calling to say hey" thing, but it is the same basic tone and same pointless purpose. Once I figure out that they don't actually have a reason for the call, it gets terminated. :p

Your mileage may vary.

Extended family is always the worst, of course.

I'm with Bovinity, guy friends call for a reason normally. If they're calling just to say hi it's because we're good friends, don't talk alot, and live very far from each other.

Maybe they're just attracted to you Rugen.

Rugen is really nice and friendly IRL. He's also one of the bluntest people in the world, and he's able to say things everyone wishes they could say to people, but we often lack the balls to. (Well, I don't lack the balls, I'm pretty blunt too, but I'm TOO NICE at times, like working when I don't want to work, which ended when I saw how Rugen handled something like that with such grace I was like, 'Why the fuck am I not doing that?!' and now I do...)

What's amazing is he has that ability which only a few people have (I have it in writing, MUCH less so in person) to be able to tell someone to go to hell, and provide directions on how to get there, and instructions on what to do with themselves once they're there...and the person will THANK YOU FOR IT.

I never call Rugen to say 'sup. Then again, I don't like yakking on the phone to yak. That doesn't apply to the few people around here I talk to because it's never "...'sup" shit, they actually have something to say, or news or are interesting. Other than that, I loathe talking on the phone.

Ironically I have a job that entails me doing just that for hours. /head desk

I hate talking on the phone too. I also hate small talk in general.

As for texting, I went on a date with a girl recently and she would not stop texting her friends during the date... I mean literally 5+ messages a minute, for the entire dinner out. I politely asked her if she would put it away for a while after it started to irritate me and she basically said, "this is me, and if you want me you have to take my texting too."

I sent her home early.

Tarot, sweetie... you've talked my ear off while my cell phone's battery went from full to empty and I plugged it back in so we could keep talking and it was fully charged by the time we were off the phone.

Unless somehow you've become less loquacious, I don't see this as happening!

When was that? If I was on pain meds then yeah, I'm super chatty. Otherwise it's a bitch to get me to even return a phone call. :( I'm also chatty if I'm stuck at the computer and bored, but that's different. ;)

AS far as Fribur's date...wow. Just...wow.

Another case where you are more considerate than me. I would have told her in a voice that would have been able to be heard by a few people around us, that when you go our on a date you are to spend time with that person and not the stupid phone, for her to text one of her friends that she'd rather be with to come pick her up, and when she decides to grow up and join the adult world to give you a call. Her actions were beyond rude.

When at home, I don't talk on the phone. If it rings and I don't know the number, I don't answer it. When my family is on a choir trip or visiting in-laws, I will go days without answering the phone. I don't text and I don't twitter. If I don't talk to them in person, I use e-mail to communicate (when did we ever think that using e-mail would be considered the *old* way of communicating?).

I had to put my daughter on extra chores a month ago due to her excessive texting (10K texts in a month!). She had a friend that went over 20K in one month. My daughter didn't realize that each "hi" "sup?" "cya" "whr r u?" "k" "by" was a cost -- she does now.

I guess because I don't care what other people think about me and I am not so self absorbed, I will never get Twitter or really feel the need for texting so damn much.

I don't care what other people think about me either -- my twitter account is, in essence, a quick form of communicating to multiple people what I'm up to -- I rarely ever "tweet", and if I do it's of the lines of "I'm at $PLACE, come join me if you want"

I despise talking on the phone. I'm pretty bad at it usually, since i'm easily distracted by shiny objects.

Twitter has generally replaced my blog reading also. I keep up with several authors (and communicate with a few) via Twitter and it's quite nice.
