I completely disagree. She's been a GOP darling because she is IMMENSELY popular with a certain segment in the nation. McCain's campaign completely floundered, probably due in large part to his 'changing' dramatically during the race (and then again after to the point where many people were like, 'Where the fuck was THIS McCain during the election?!') and her existence on the ticket and her appeal to a large portion of the nation, pretty much single handedly pulled his balls out of the fire.

And that's from someone who can't staaaaand her.

No argument there. I absolutely agree she's bad for the GOP...at least the GOP *I* was interested in when I joined the party. But she's perfection itself for the Jesus freak/ignorant & proud of it 'Joe Sixpack' crowd.

I hate to say it, but as a woman I was so thankful McCain wasn't elected. She is not someone I would want in the 'historic' role of a woman reaching that high office. I felt embarassment and shame every time she opened her fucking mouth in a serious interview (which was why she didn't have many such interviews and they demonized the media for ...letting her look like a goddamn fool.)

I WAS happy when right after the election there was talk of forming a party around her and her 'ideals'. I thought it might draw the kooks out of the GOP, and the party could get back on track. Unfortunately that momentum petered out.

I think they realize that in a 2 party system it just doesn't benefit them. Which is why a lot of people have been holding on to shreds of hope with the GOP (and probably the DNC too, I'm sure there are unhappy people there as well).

The drawback of a many party system though would be that a fringe minority could get elected...like Sarah Palin. /shudder

That would entirely depend on the accuracy of the flames, whether anyone was being "followed" around, and whether or not it was merely an offtopic response to someone who decided to go start going offtopic in the first place.

I think we just need presidential runoffs personally. 50%+ to win.

I like the automatic runoff system they have in Ireland. Basically you rank all of your choices on the ballot. All of the #1 choices are tallied. If no one hits 50%, then the candidate with the lowest vote count loses his/her votes and those votes get assigned to the #2 choice on those ballots. This gets repeated until one candidate hits 50%.

I like it because it allows for multiple parties to be able to present their platforms, influence debate, and gauge strength while still having majority parties. There's no doubt in my mind that the Republican Party, for example, would be better off if it needed to listen to the Libertarian Party's platform in order to bring over enough #2 votes to have a chance to hit the 50% mark.

Honestly, the reasons I see that Bush got office are:

1) His compassionate conservative bullarky in 2000 that got him a lot of votes from outside the standard republican party. Heck, they even managed to woo a part of the gay community (that weren't the Log "we hate ourselves" cabin republicans) using Cheney's daughter.
2) The lack of a real candidate from the Dems in 2004 combined with a sense of "well, it is his war..." got him elected a second time.

None of which actually has anything to do with what I said. I can only assume you were trying to be funny.

At this point, the republican machine has fallen apart so much and not showing any signs of repairing itself, I'm starting to look forward to them running Sarah Palin with Joe the Plumber as her VP candidate. Oh, what a fun ride that will be.
