And as a side note, this is a classic example of arm chair quarterback.

If the WHO and CDC were not reacting and there was an outbreak, people would cry. They have actually been criticized in some circles of acting too SLOWLY at this point.

It is easy to be smarter than everyone else after the fact and having no pressure on yourself.

I agree. If there were one area to be extra paranoid, I'd think it would be on pandemics.

You're "armchair quarterbacking" too, pal.

And maybe people would be a little more worried if it...you know...were doing something.

And I don't think I've seen anyone criticize the CDC or WHO. Seems to me like they've been doing their job nicely.

How am I arm chair quarterbacking?

Just curious - what statements have I possibly made on this subject that can be construed as such?

Well, they closed the Lewisville ISD (Texas) for the week. My kids now have an extra Spring Break. (no they don't have to make up the days. The board passed a special exemption so they don't have to make up the days)

but bad news for me and my wife. Her contract with the pre-school she teaches has her at an hourly rate. They are on the Lewisville ISD schedule so she is "off" this week as well, with no pay.

You obviously do not understand what arm chair quarterbacking is. If you would like me to explain, I can, but I suggest you start with Google.

Also not all school closures were due to the CDC. I know of one instance (and I'm sure there are more) where a catholic school was closed based on false information.

A parent claimed to have been diagnosed with swine flu. The school shut down immediately and misinformation spread, there were claims that the 'health department' had told them to. Turns out the woman had called the school, lied and said she had it (she not only didn't have it, no doctor had said she did!) and said that she was told they should shut down the school.

Meanwhile the parent I heard this from was livid (because they're a science-y guy) because they had to make quick arrangements for the kids being home on no notice...PLUS knowing that there wasn't any risk to the students anyway.

Even if the woman HAD had it (and she didn't) it's doubtful anyone would have requested that school be entirely shut down.

As to the woman, it remains unsure if she's a nutbag attention whore, or simply convinced herself she DID have it...and lied because she believed she really did and really believed people would be in danger and she knew better...which is another kind of nuts I guess. :?

Yes, I know it was a loose usage of it. But sitting around saying, "The world needs to be more scared." isn't far off from me saying, "The world needs to be less scared."

It's not that I'm smart, it's that you are a bit too stupid in your poor little attempts to flame :(

Where did I write "the world needs to be more scared"?

I wrote that I wonder how people are not taken back a bit by this and described a response I personally might make. I didn't say "everyone should hide in a hole." I didn't say "people should do this". I noted that it surprises me people dismiss the situation. Oh well... then I described the action I personally might take. I didn't give any recommendations on what people should do.

I know thinking is hard, but you should give it a whirl some day.

I went ahead and found a link for you so you can read and understand the term. Hey, even I learned - no space in arm chair!! Keep trying little buddy, you'll catch up some day:

Live google map of the outbreak.

It's starting to lose accuracy. There were 3 or 4 cases in IL that aren't on there.

Don't know if anyone's provided this like but it's being updated at a new link.

Ugh.

WH Warns Massive Swine Flu Spread
http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=8403214

I hate this. I hate it mostly because my 2 year old has asthma and a respiratory flu scares the shit out of me. We know a family whose 5yo got it while at Disney this summer, and it proved to not be that big of a deal.

Still. Yesterday my 1st grader got sent home with a note warning that the school had already seen several cases of flu, unidentified as normal seasonal flu or H1N1 at the moment. Another parent I work with whose kid goes to school in a different part of Atlanta said they got a note warning of the near-apocalypse, seriously. Like warning that electricity and utilities may shut down because people won't be going to work.

It's going to be a fucked up couple months - reality or not. People are going crazy, it's unsettling how people are reacting to the mere possibility of swine flu.

I'm a little worried myself. If I come down with something I'm going to have to get a motel room and suffer through it on my own because my pops is over 70 and I sure as hell don't want to give that shit to him.

Joxur, talk to your daughter's doctor about the pneumonia vaccine, it's a HUGE help for asthma patients. Also if you haven't done so already (and I'm almost positive you have but I'd feel bad not mentioning it just in case) do the comphrensive allergy tests. I have adult onset asthma...but no known allergen triggers (no hay fever, no pollen probs, I'm lucky!). When I finally got the pneumonia shot it stopped that 2x a year bullshit where I'd get so sick and my asthma would flare up. now it's only a problem under anesthesia or when there's a lot of smoke in the air due to our fire season in CA.

Anyway...just wanted to toss that out for you. Also talk with your ped. about the flu and respiratory infections, they may be able to ease your fears on how serious it could be. I mean it could be serious, but they may tell you that as long as she was brought to a hospital she'd be absolutely fine, etc.

It must be awful though for any parent to have to worry about a potential wide spread flu which could be more devistating to the young. =\

Yeah, I'm calling his pulmonologist today. I talked to a woman who has a daughter with similar issues yesterday (and has the same pulmonologist - what are the odds?) and she said there was a way to get the vaccine early if your child was considered at risk.

We did an early allergy test when he was 18 months old, but it was inconclusive - not allergic to much at all. I've heard that babies don't test for allergies until they're a few years old, so I am going to probably do it again when the allergist recommends it. I'm leery of the comprehensive test (is that still where they prick the skin a few dozen times? yeah, the 2 year old wouldn't dig that too much).
