Ok, this is just funny:

http://www.balloon-juice.com/?p=15609

Quote:
The Republicans—who had just finally won control of the State House for the first time in 40+ years – were suppose to elect their Speaker of the House today. And failed!

Anaxamander has the details in his/her diary. The Tennessee State House has 50 Republicans and 49 Democrats. Well, Rep. Kent Williams (R-TN) got the support of all 49 Democrats plus his own vote to put himself in the Speaker’s chair.

***

In the last election, a bunch of belligerent right-wing radicals tried to bully Rep. Williams (a moderate) into taking far-right stands—going so far as to threaten boycotts on his family business, etc.

Well, Rep. Williams had had enough of bullies and blowhards destroying the Republican Party from within. And the Democrats knew it. So the Democrats approached Rep. Williams about being the new House Speaker.

Rep. Williams said, “yes,” and history was made, just minutes ago.

Quote:
The official Republican nominee, Jason Mumpower (a wingnut from Bristol in Sullivan County) was left speechless, clutching the family bible that he had brought in preparation for taking the Speaker’s oath of office.

This kind of made my day.

Honestly, just put aside their politics and Tennessee really has some great people. I experienced more than my share of southern hospilitality when I visited the place =)

Could be worse as far as politics go though, at least they're better than Kentucky or Kansas!

I'm hearing that the only reason the Dems were able to nominate someone is that some new republican accidentally voted to allow them to do so.

heh.

Indeed, though during my travels of the south(I've been to Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi.. though the latter two were brief visits) I saw racism *once*. I would not presume to know a whole shitload of what it's like to be black in the south, but I do feel that it's not quite "OMG THIS IS AWFUL". No question there is much more work to be done, but it's not exactly a complete hellhole either especially compared to anything 60's-70's and prior.

And my personal belief stands that good, honest people can still be racists. There really aren't many excuses to be a racist in this day in age, but I would keep "growing up with racist bigotted parents, other adults in influential positions, and peers" as something that is pretty damned hard to contend with. It's not really an excuse, but I can't imagine it is easy to overcome.

Time goes on, and racism dilutes itself in a relative sea of more open-minded(racially, at least) people from generation to generation. Problem is when someone is raised in a situation where it is consistently banged into their head from birth. Not impossible to overcome, but I find it hard to label people as truly bad based on that alone.

Heheh, I probably shouldn't. Some definite bias on my part... I mean, I look at that electoral map and shake my head. Whatever happened to the Kansas creationism in the schools thing? =D

The biggest manifestation of racism in the south is the makeup of local politics. It's all black politicians from the black areas and all white politicians from the white areas, and they can't get fucking shit done. Having lived in Augusta, GA for 10 years, it was worse there than anywhere else.

I've pretty much never encountered open racism in the south, even while married to a black woman for 7 years. It's really mostly about the politics, at least from my perspective.
